IGVENTURE

Training Camp @ the Jersey Shore

Day 3 on the peninsula and really enjoying not going to work. My typical day involves waking up around 6:30 am, making scrambled eggs on toast, brewing some coffee then heading out on my bike.

Today I headed south to Island Beach State Park, this is a far as I can go without hitting water...well actually sand then water. Stupid Garmin is down so I can't give you the link, but todays ride was nothing special. 17.8mph avg for 1:20. This is just to stay loose for tomorrow's 3 hour tempo/LT ride I have planned. I'll get up a little earlier to get back by the time the kids are waking up...like 10:30. This is the one good thing about having teenage kids.

I think this ride had 4' of elevation. Spence, I wear my generic roadie kit when pedelling on Island Beach. This way I won't get hassled by other roadies wanting to throw down a challenge or asking for autographs. The cars in the background are letting air out of their tires and heading onto the beach to surf fish.

After the ride me and the boys went to play golf at Belaire Golf Course in Wall Township. We're not really into golf but this is our annual thing to do while on vacation. Even though we suck at golf we manage to have fun. On the way back to the beach house we stopped for icees at WaWa...its a known fact that they have the best icees. Oh yeah and Evan has his permit so I let him drive back...we nearly got killed on the circle in Wall.

I think this pose was on a Clash album.

We managed to make it home safely with Evan driving then we headed up to the beach. I jumped in the ocean as soon as I got there...cause thats what I do. Clouds rolled in and it rained crazy hard for 10 minutes then the sun came back out. For the rest of the afternoon I worked on trying to get rid of my cyclists tan...James and Mandi are gonna be like so jealous.

Tonight we're content to eat left-overs cause its easy and cheap. After dinner the plan is to head to Seaside boardwalk and play some skeeball and hit up the video games...maybe some rides if the kids are into it.

I could get used to this schedule, I'll let you know how tomorrow goes Spence.

Training Camp @ the Jersey Shore

Day 4 and the training as well as good times are going just as planned. Right now its raining but the morning was good and we're just getting cozy here back at the house. Shmev went to Red Box on his skate board to get a movie, The Other Guys. After I finish this write up its movie time.

Did the kinda early for vacation roll out of bed at 6:00 and on the bike by 6:45 for a 3hr. tempo/LT ride. The morning was still and not much wind on the peninsula, which is rare. I love getting out early like this, the weather is a lot cooler, there is less traffic and I am feeling fresh.

After a brief 5 min. warm up I hit the gas to tempo speed and even though I am feeling great I hold back a little and follow my plan to ramp this ride up as I go and finish strong. The ride is feeling perfect as I leave the shore area and head west to Upper Freehold. The speed is effortless as I spin at a cadence of around 90-100rpm.

Riding is a lot safer in western Monmouth County the shore area can be dangerous for a road bike at 21mph. The ride is not a complete loop due to the fact that I put more miles in out west so I can wrap up the 3hr. ride on Ocean Ave. in Belmar. Even this was a little dicey, but I got it done.

21mph avg. for 3hrs...mission accomplished.

Its amazing what you can accomplish on a bike when its not 100 degrees and your feeling fresh. My best efforts on a bike come the week after a rest week, I guess this is no surprise. The ability to recover and put out some wattage is so much easy with rest. I'd say being rested is 95% of the equation for competitve cycling, the other 5% is nutrition. This is not scientific but rather based on the Iggyfeel scale.

After 3hrs at tempo I was in Spring lake and took it easy and soft pedalled the next hour back to Ortley. I got a flat 10 min from the house but put a tube in and was on my way. A bunch of cyclists stopped when they saw me fixing my flat to make sure I was good...that is one good think about a peninsula, everyone has to pedal in and out one way to get off the Island. There is always someone around should you need help.

Back at the house I shower off after my ride and me and the kids head to WaWa for our daily Icee fix. Shmev drives again, I like being chauffered around. On the way back to the house this track comes up on the CD player and Shmev skips over...WOOOOOOOOOOO! how can you turn this groove off. I put it back to track 3 and we rock it old school at the Jersey shore.

I Like WaWa Icees(cherry)

Solid pace there. Are you going to aim for the sub-5 hour solo century before the week is up?

I tried to listen but I'm with the kid, gotta fast forward that song. It's pretty bad.

I'm not ready for a 5 hr century, maybe next year.

Fast Fwd the Sugar Hill Gang??!!!!

Nice ride dude, solid.

Put your dam selt belt on when a 16 year old is driving! Ill be glad to lend you my Leatt brace and body armor too untill he gets in a few miles 🙂

Day 6- Yesterday was a rest day so I slept in until 8:30 then got up and had a leisurely breakfast. Since I’m staying at my dad’s house down here he asked me to trim the juniper hedge in the back yard. When you have free room and board at the jersey shore you say no problem to this request. Jamie held the ladder while I trimmed this monster with the electric sheers. We knocked it out in less then 1.5 hour then we headed over to the local soccer field so J could work on the skills before the start of the season in September.

The rest of the day was spent at the beach on a perfect day. The water was warm and not too rough so I spent a lot of time in the water. The kids caught me working on my tan…Pearl & Mandi, you guys are going down.

This morning I did the stay loose ride down to Island Beach State Park. Tomorrow I have a 16-mile TT planned so I want to save my effort for this. The course is 8 miles out and 8 miles back, no lights, no cross streets, no stops; this makes for a perfect TT course. It starts after the gate into the state park and goes out to the end of the peninsula, which is the halfway point. This is 8 miles then turn around and head back. There is no elevation but there is wind, which can be brutal. This morning I was just cruising and avg. over 21 mph. going out but coming back into the headwind my avg. was under 17mph. I’d like to hit 22mph avg for this ride tomorrow but the wind speed may dictate my results. Raw power is my weakness, I can climb well but producing big watts on flats into wind is my kryptonite.

Here is the link from this morning. Island Beach State Park is the green part, with no built up stuff on it. You can see by my HR where I did this section of the ride. My HR stays steady then dips at turn around and goes back up.

Here's the gang; Mary, Shmev, J, Mother in-law (not a pain in the ass)

Mini golf at Barnicle Bills. This place is the best mini golf course on the penninsula, I've played em all. The only other one you can compare it to is the 36 hole course at Point Pleasant, and yes I will be hitting that place up this week. We rock the mini-golf. J won the other night and shot one under while me and Shmev were one over.

Barnicle Bill is kinda eerie, like Babe the Blue Ox in Fargo. This is why I like this place.

wow, barnacle bills. man, that brings back some memories. when i was like 10 my cousin and i tried to walk there from ocean beach unit 3. we almost made it too.

man were we were tired of going to the pizza place every night and playing paper boy for 4 straight hours.

Training Camp @ the Jersey Shore

I'm back from the Jersey Shore Training camp but let me update you on what I did over the last couple of days.

Day 7 - To round out the week I decided to do a TT down at Island Beach State Park. This park is only a 15 minute bike ride from Ortley Beach where I'm staying. The park itself is at the end of rt 35 and begins at the gate house. It goes 8 miles out to the tip of the peninsula, round trip its a 16 mile course. Its dead flat and there are not stop signs, lights or cross streets to deal with. The hard part of this course is the wind, it can be brutal. Just a 10mph head wind is enough to put a hurting on you.

Well here is my result, kinda what I expected. 22.1 mph avg for 44.27 minutes.
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/105888301

My weakness is lack of power, at 150lbs. I am more suited to climbing then I am at overpowering a headwind on a flat road. Power is something I need to work on to improve as a cyclist. Doing this flat ride into wind is great for me to practice in the hopes of improving power.

If you live near Island Beach State Park or are on vacation in the area give this TT a shot. This is a real popular stretch of road with cyclists. Here are the details.

Day 8- Last day of training camp. With already over 15hrs of riding in and 275 miles on the bike I felt somewhat fresh. Not ready for a race but rather looking forward to putting on some more miles at a nice pace.

For the ride I kept it at an aerobic pace and gradually ramped it up based on how I felt. Speed is something I have really come to enjoy and for this ride it seemed to come easily. This was a nice way to finish out the week.

Jersey Shore Recap

We got home last night. As I sit hear typing this up its raining and am glad to be home, the shore can be depressing when it rains.

This was a perfect week for me, the training was great, time with the family was awesome and the weather was perfect. I like my job but I like time off better. By the end of July I am burnt out from getting 6hrs of sleep a night and trying to fit in cycling, the job, kids activities and the heat.

Taking a rest week before vacation proved to be the right move, coming into training camp I was ready to ride. The schedule worked out well, my kids are older and more independent now as teenagers. They also sleep until 11:00am so as I'm coming home from a ride there just waking up.

Aside from riding we did manage to have fun doing other stuff to. We ate at Surf Taco in Seaside Park 3 times. I like eating mexican food while girls come in off the beach in bikini's to eat...is this wrong?

Mini golf at Castaway Cove in Point Pleasant, best mini along the Jersey Shore. What is your favorite course? Oh and I went native of vacation, I didn't shave all week.

This is in front of the house in Ortley. I get my thin genetics from my folks, they are the two old people on the left. J is missing here, he ditched us to go hang out with a friend. My dad is putting the house up for sale this fall, I keep trying to talk him out of it. We only come down for 1 wk out of the summer but after that week we love that house. Pearl and Mandi, my tan is BOSS. I am going to look like Clint Eastwood in 2 yrs.

I like mini golf. B Bills in Lavalette and Castaway Cove in Pt. Pleasant are must play courses. J beat me by 2 strokes at BBills but I beat him at the Cove by 1...so at least I got that going for me.

Wow that jersey is old school, awesome.

Tom is doing ok, his shop moved down the street to what used to be the hardware store.

Some of the old school guys are still around...Manny, Jim Bonacorda, Phil, Joe Batista, Tommy Crutis and Dave Justle are still riding.

Jimbo does the Thurs. night ride. They meet 5:30 at the shop or 5:45 from Mountainside FD.

Do you do the road bike thing?

Do you still wear that jersey...if you ever want to sell it let me know. I like old school Cranford bike shop jerseys.

No i don't road ride would like to start maybe next spring.have not worn that jersey in a few years,it just reminds me of the good old days of south mountain and watchung.just thought you would enjoy seeing it best regards Glenn

Well today was back to work. I don't dread going back after vacation, because I like what I do. Being out on a golf course, even if it is raining is still better then being in one of those cube things all day.
Its fun to bust balls with the guys at work, they have plenty of ammo on me...they've seen me in my cycling gear.

After putting in an 18+ hr. week of riding I took off yesterday and just did a 30 min. spin today to stay loose. The plan for tomorrow will be to hit up the High Gear A ride. I try to do this ride 2x/month, if I did it more often I think I would get burnt out from it, physically and mentally. I'm looking forward to hitting this up, hopefully Norm an Utah can make an appearence...its always more fun with teamies.

Yesterday I did a lot of laundry from being away on vacation. I hate doing laundry, folding clothes sucks. Listening to Gayngs during this chore helps to make this job suck less. I really like listening to this when its raining out, its one of those rainy day albums. I love the fact that I can piss my kids off like I pissed my parents off when I crank the stereo.

This album flows like 6 mile & Allaire put together. Just put in on and leave it go, by the 2nd time your hooked.

I've posted this clip before on the music thread but here it is again.

Tomorrow night has rainout written all over it. It's just not meant to be for me this summer.

Ride Stuff

Last night was the High Gear ride, typical A ride with a bunch of men who ride bikes fast. Vreeland was on fire, he blew him self up at the front a lot but managed to come back several times for more and put a hurtin on us. My buddy John Kuhn showed up and was his typical strong buff rider self.

Its always fun to watch Utah go up the Libery Corner climb toward the end. Vreeland went early then Bucknell kid followed by Utah, me and Eric. Bucknell was uncatchable, Utah led the chase the first 3rd of the way up, then I went around him when he was spent. As we passed Vreeland I heard someone behind be breathing like they were delivering a baby, I think it was Utah. With less then a third of the hill left to climb Utah kicks in the nitrous and blows past me. I manage to get on Sneeze's wheel and he pulls me back up to the front and we blow by everyone. Thanks sneeze. After that its a pretty tame ride back to the shop.

Work Stuff

I have been back on a dozer lately and lovin it. The machine I use has a 6 way blade on it, which basically means I can carve out anything. Before I worked for the park system I used to work in golf course construction as a shaper (dozer operator). I liked what I did but it was a tough way to make a living. I had steady work but no benefits, I got only 2 paid holidays, no sick days, and no vacation...life sucked.

In the park system my title is Assistant Superintendent which basically means managing golf course maintenance. Maintenance is always more boring then construction stuff, so when I have an opportunity to get involved in projects I jump on it. The bosses leave me alone and I do my thing...what could be better.

297148_2293447305499_1528536207_2495791_4024077_n.jpg

I found this little friend on the back of my dozer seat this morning. The last 2 days this little guy had a nice spider web on the back of my seat in the mornings. I finally saw the spider this morning when I came in to work. I was going to leave it while I used the machine but the though of this thing climbing up my back gave me the creeps. I moved him into the brush.

Feather Legged Spider munching on its prey
