Beautiful day to race Stewart at SSAP, Segundo is second guessing his gearing...or maybe he's wondering if he can hang on my wheel:getsome:
Yes I have been lazy in posting up. I keep meaning to update this thread but always get distracted or make excueses for not doing it. At this point I'll just work my way backwards to get you up to date.
Last Sunday was Single Speed Apalooza, this was my 3rd year doing it. At the line I was all smiles, chatting it up with anyone in earshot. This was also as close to Cody I got the whole race. That little dude in the blue Watchung Wheelman kit is fast as hell. He's a really nice kid, since he's only 22 yrs. old and I'm 47 I can call him a kid. I won't give you the whole race recap, I'll just say the fireroad prelog was fast as hell. Got into the single track about 15ish and finished the race 16th out of about 100. I passed some peeps but some peeps passed me towards the end. I was happy with my finish considering I did not spend a lot of time mtbing this winter. Before I tell you what I did this winter here's a pic of my first SSAP in 2011. This is what you usually look like after riding Stewart in April.
After goofing off most of the winter doing non structured mtb rides with Woody, Utah, Kirt, ROB I INJURED MYSELF GETTING SECOND PLACE AT BATTENKILL GLICK and xc skiing with Santalucia I decided to set a goal to come into Battenkill in peak shape, or as close to peak as I can get in 8 weeks. The plan started in mid February and by Battenkill I was feeling like a transformed roadie. I was averaging about 15hrs/wk in the saddle, putting in interval work and long rides. I ended up getting 20th in cat 4. The results don't sound that impressive but I was happy with my finish. I made it to the final miles of the race with the lead group but could not hold onto the front runners. I had enough in the tank to finish strong and improve on my race from last year. Following a structured plan for 8 wks taught me how to train but it also taught me that there is text book training and then there is racing. Just because you follow a plan does not guarantee a podium finish. Training like this will help you have strong race, thats the best you can hope for...that and maybe the really fast guys are in another group.
I have more wisdom and insight to share on other topics as well, stay tuned.
