HVAC Advise and thoughts

I'm starting a full gut renovation at my nearing 100 yr old house and I want to run a inverter driven heat pump system. Can I get away without a secondary furnace? I don't want one but I also don't want to hear from my wife that she is cold for the next 20 yrs. I've been reading up and watching yt walkthroughs on different systems but they come from different parts of the country and am hoping to get some more local insight. The house will have all new(sealing) windows and doors and actually be insulated so from what I have seen I think I want to run a HRV or an ERV and I'm not sure if one is better than the other in our north jersey(bergen county) climate. I want to have a well informed plan in mind when I meet with the GC's hvac professional. I don't want to be pushed into what they systems they might do the most of but what is best for me and my house. Thanks for reading through this and any experienced advice is greatly appreciated.

Are you going to have gas for any other appliances? Stove/Dryer/Water Heater?

If so, a backup gas furnace may be a nice option as you can run it off a generator.

The equipment exists for heat pump only operation in our climate. Real load and duct calculations need to be performed.
Contractor selection is as important as equipment sizing, make sure the contractor is a certified factory installer, Mitsubishi Diamond is one cert to look for. Be sure he gives you those calcs and commissioning paperwork, along with the warranty.
That said, you may not like the pricing on quality equipment and installation, ROI may be quite far down the road.

This is going to be spilt system or ducted?

Can add an electric heat frame to ductwork to boost on the coldest days.

I added a hot water frame to my a/c system to be secondary to my radiant floor. Worked great

Can I also run the heat pump off

Ducted- I'll ask about the radiant floors as an option. I was hoping to keep the system simple and comfortable. Thanks

How efficient is the heat pump? Note when it gets cold outside the heat pump will struggle to warm the house. We have both, the furnace kicks in when it's under 40F outside. My units are over ten years old so new ones my be more efficient.

this is where if it is ducted, it can have resistive backup. if it can't keep up, and falls 5deg back, the electric kicks in.

I really like the idea of geo thermal in this case, vs air - I have enough room to do a trench, vs well.
i'm too old to do it tho 😉
