Hurricane thread(aka kitchen appliances I can't afford thread)

Monday at lunch, I saw a coupon for $50 off that little Harbor Freight Honda knock-off 1600W inverter-generator. Sweet! I've been wanting one for years so I snagged it. Started on the first pull. Sips fuel. 10+ hours/gallon.

The storm didn't seem that bad from my home office. Power went out around lunch on Tuesday. Internet (Comcast cable) stayed up initially. Fired up the little generator for the fridge, computers, etc. SO much nicer than the big 5500W that I bought just before Sandy. Then I took a quick drive and found tree massive trees down on a road around the corner that carried some pretty substantial looking wires so I knew to expect a wait.

After 24hrs, I still had to pull out the 5500W. My house is below street level so all my, ahem, gray water goes to a big tank in the basement with two big pumps. I hard wired the 5500 to it and started running it an hour or two at a time so we could take showers. Started on first pull (cue patting on back for storing properly).

The worst #firstworldproblem was Internet. Comcast was down by Wed AM. I thought I had all my bases covered with ATT and Verizon hotspots. Neither of them worked for shit on Wednesday. ATT started working Thursday afternoon (tower came back up?) but I went into the office on Friday anyway, where there's an insane quad-turbo 2000hp diesel generator.

And, back up sometime last night. Time to do some maintenance and put it all away for the next time.

I can’t complain much since our power had been back on since Wednesday at 1am.

but 15 minutes ago it went out. Estimated repair time tmw night?!!

guess the generator is coming back outta the shed soon. Ugh

Since we were trying to go to bed didn’t want to worry about fridgeS overnight. At least it wasn’t raining

1:30 am set up generator. power came back at 3am.

now I have to go put it back in the shed. At least I’m getting better at the setup routine.

This will be much less hassle once inhave the back feed outlet set up within the next few weeks.

I need a nap.

And now seems the main fridge in the kitchen may be collateral damage none of the control panel buttons work to reset the door open and high alarms

Already on hold for 30 minutes with insurance company.

if I have to replace my fridge won’t be sad it sucks anyway. And it’s 15 years old.

Thanks Isiah or whatever your hurricane name Is.

I guess im going to try and turn this into a what generator should I buy thread 🙂 Really only question is are you in favor of straight up generator or inverter generators that are a little bit more expense with less output, but more efficient and quiet.

Portable? NG, Propane, or Gasoline?

Is quiet that important in an emergency that lasts a couple days?
If it isn't big enough to run the A/C, just turn it off over-night, and don't open the fridge.

it would be a portable one, to run two fridges a few lights and the modem/router if that wire isn't ripped down too. No plans to installed a plug in the house or full back up gen.

4000W is small, will do the job. a couple long extension cords i guess?
any sump pumps?

I need to hookup the garage to the main panel as the storm snapped the not-to-code line that was powering the garage. My idea is to bury a conduit and install a panel in the garage so that I will be able to run a welder and hopefully a stationary air compressor. Then I though that a stand by (or 9000/12000w portable) generator would be perfect next to the garage, which is 50ft away from the house to avoid the noise. But I don’t thing I could run the generator next to the garage and have the transfer switch at the main panel). Things are getting complicated because now I think that I also want to bury the main line from the street...maybe gave the main panel in the garage and run the house one as secondary? Or should I just run two separate lenses from and to the garage (one from the primary to the secondary panel, the second from the generator to the transfer switch)? And by line I mean 2 hot wires + neutral + ground in 6awg.

Appliance repair called me today says the Viking fridge can't be repaired because they dont make parts for it anymore - electric control panel failed and got zapped by the storm.

Waiting for the official document so I can send that to insurance claim. deductible is $500 so wifey may get her new fridge after all... stay tuned.

p.s. it will NOT be a Viking model.
