HOH is back!

Standard road gearing 53/39 with 11-25 cassette. But I have a compact crankset buried somewhere.

1999 is calling 😀

Sure it is still the studly standard - but when are you spinning out 53-11?

i'm mid front and 11-28, maybe 10-28 on the roadie, but 11-32 is available!

Actually I was doing a lot of road racing, especially crits, when I put this bike together. So I definitely used 53x11 in sprints. But these days the road bike stays either on the trainer or on the same roads near my home, none of which require low gearing.

I'm busting. I'll be too slow too ride with anyone, but let's all coordinate for a pic.

Jesus, I didn’t think anyone actually rode that gearing anymore. Yeah, you will be hurting at 39/25. That being said, I have ridden that loop with that gearing so isn’t like it is impossible.

The only “steep” climb I would think about is the very last one where you have the option to bail out and head back to the elks club or suffer up a climb at mile 71 of 77ish.

And it probably only feels steep cause it’s the end of the ride.

My rookie event I did it with a 50/34 and a 10-25 10 speed bike but really 11-28 is ideal IMHO.

That is a big decision point! Either ride the course or don't. It isn't particularly long, and I don't think it is any steeper than the middle of rileyville or pine hill . But damn, put it around mile 70! Spot on.

That one dirt climb off RT 29 had some extra hurt in it. Maybe more mental ?

It’s totally the mental factor the times I have done it our little group always says “no shortcuts” But if you didn’t save that last bit of energy for the climb then you’re toast. I even give credit to the people I have seen walking it for trying.

That dirt climb off 29 is also a mental mind game since all you see is nice smooth flat road ahead but then you turn left. That is much shorter than it seems too but a little steep at the end.

why would you do Hoh and skip the last climb?

That one off 29 is short though, 0.5 mile and only 4%
In the Og hoh, this was close to the end and hurt way more, now it is half way through the loop so you are fresh and you don’t have Barry road to deal after that.
I think they need to rename this, the Easy Roads of Hunterdon EROH

What do you run now? There are very few steep climbs on this route, the top of rileyville, pine road and the top of Wilson, hopewell
Amwell road and the small ramp at the top of Lindbergh. Pine road is probably the worst at maybe 13%. All in all, there isn’t much hell on the course as they go around the hardest stuff.

Yep pine is the hardest of all those climbs

For the record. I never skipped it.

I still run standard. Pretty much the same story as JMann. If I were starting over I’d get the compact for my current riding.
