Helmets on the street

Hey guys anyone gets pull over by the cops for not wearing a helmet?
because yesterday i was riding and no one had on a helmet on the streets or even the trail.

i'm not sure, but i think there's an age (like 14 or 16 or something) where you are no longer required to wear a helmet by law.

My coworker's brother in law has been in a coma for a week because he fell off his bike on the street and hit his head. No helmet.

damn, misleading...i thought this was a thread about you finding some helmets on the street....oh well.

USE Yer HEAD, WEAR A HELMET :getsome:

Always wear a helmet

While NJ law does not require adults riding bicycle to wear a helmet,
nevertheless you have to wear it.

This is what happens if you don't -

I got hit into the rear wheel by an SUV on a road bike. So I flew into the Mercedes parked on a side, making it trough its rear window into the saloon, triggering air bags to come off. I broke my arm, cut my face into two parts and got a major head injury. If that Mercedes wasn't there I would be dead now. Helmet could save my head. Now I can't remember my social security number, it is hard to remember people names and phones numbers, dates of birth etc.

Please, ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET. No exceptions.

I often cruise the hood without a helmet when I'm pulling the kids (they have em on)... After seeing that not no moe

Dude, that is horrible. By the way, what kind of 3rd world hospital did you get sent to? Just noticing the wall, the pillow and the mattress have seen better days. Plus, the bandaging looks like something I would do. The emergency room at Morristown I was in two weeks ago has flat screen TVs and nice lighting.

This happened in Kiev, Ukraine. The hospital, like every other institution ran by the government, is terrible. This is a downside of free health care. Doctors there are struggling for money to survive and the last piece of equipment was bought like 20 years ago, when Ukraine was a part of USSR. So to get at least some kind of service in time, you have to bribe a doctor (around $5 a day though). There were some paid hospitals, but I could not afford it with my salary there and there is no such thing as a credit for health care.

Well, I could talk about Ukraine for hours, so that's it for now.

God Bless America!

Where I live I see a lot of kids and adults on their bike without helmets and they are literally riding all over the road. It's insane.

Yesterday after leaving my ride, one of my riders hit an uneven spot on a ramp and the next thing she knew she was on the ground. She's lucky to have a black eye and the impression of her helmet on the side of her face because in the ER she was told in no uncertain terms that she would be dead if she were not wearing her helmet correctly.

She then reminded me that I made her take her helmet off and that I fit it to her when she started riding with me last summer. That gave me chills.

Always wear a helmet and don't feel silly asking your shop how to wear it correctly.

It's insane.

Insane is a bit much. I wear my helmet all of the time out on the road or trail but never, ever around my neighborhood or taking a run down to 7-11. What are you going to do, slap a helmet on every time you take a bike for a test ride?

Unfortunately accidents happen when you don't expect them. That's why they're called "accidents", an unforeseen and unplanned event.

Yes, the same as you could be killed the second you turn your car on. But do you stop driving, in most cases no. This helmet debate is only valid for kids and when other peoples rights are are stake (ie, no mtb's at a park, no bikes on the street). Other than that it is a personal choice.

I don't stop driving, but I do put the seat belt on. Takes two about 4 seconds to put a helmet on. About as long as it takes to put a seat belt on.

Exactly. That's what I would do. You see, I was always wearing my helmet until I took a bike for a short test drive around the hood. And, damn it, I got hit by a car and almost died.

Of course, the law doesn't require it and you are not obligated to do so. So it is your personal choice. Some people learn from their own mistakes. In this case, we can learn only if we get lucky and stay alive. This kind of mistake is deadly.

When i was 16, i was "too cool" to wear a helmet. Now that i am older, i dont have any problem wearing one whether i am racking up the mileage on the trail or road / or even going around the block. i dont understand why i wouldnt wear one when i was younger.. i dont see what the big deal is anymore...

Your perspective of "coolness" changed. Now it is more cool to be alive rather than dead 😀

Same happened to me and I believe will happen or happened to everyone else.
