headphones while riding

I ride in the middle of the trail.
If that makes me an As**ole- so be it.

you're only an @$$hole if you dont move out of people's way when they alert you to their presence. so, if youre BLASTING music in your ears to the degree that you cant hear people who are politely asking you to move aside then, you are an @$$hole imho. everyone needs to be courteous on the trails...BLASTING music in your ears may cause you to be a d!ck if you run into somebody or if youre blocking their desire to pass you.

that's all.

But seriously, if you are flying down the trail and calling people who are slow names, you are not giving our sport a good name.

Sounds like you may spend some time at allaire😉

I always make an effort to slow down when I pass people. I always give way to the person climbing up hill, stop for horse traffic and try whenvever possible to engage hikers, dog walkers, and even hunters to make sure we are all not looked at as asshole bikers. This is my backyard, I have been riding allaire for the better part of 20 years, have done my share of trail maintenance there, ridden with both slow and fast alike, but when you are so stupid as too blast your headphones to the point that your are oblivious to everything and everyone around you I do think you are the asshole. I have no problem with you strapping a friggin boom box to your bars as long as you can hear enough to give some consideration to everyone else around you. and if you do ride with the boom box at least blast some slayer!!!

slayer rocks but i am more of a system of a down fan. 😀 I had no idea that this was question would kick off such a debate .:hmmm:

I used to be 100% against riding with an ipod, but started doing it in the fall on long solo road rides. I set the volume so that I can fully hear the song, but can still hear cars coming up behind me, and obviously horns and sirens. On the MTB, I am usually interested in the trail enough to keep myself occupied all day, so no ipod there.

I need to amend my opinion to add a third thing
my opinion is simple:

(1) to each his/her own. if you like a soundtrack - go for it. if you'd rather listen to nature - go for it. sometimes I like it. sometimes I dont.

(2) use common sense. have the volume down so that you can hear people coming at you or coming from behind and seeking to pass. use common sense - e.g., if you're at Hartshorne or Allaire at a time of day when its filled with bikers/hikers, be smart and leave them at home. having headphones on so loud that people cant communicate with you (see examples above) is just a selfish d#ckhead move. In GLawn's example above that other rider was the @sshole. I have had similar experiences (mostly with hikers but once with a rider at Allaire). I had to SCREAM at them - right behind them before they could hear me. the music had to be blasting - they were totally oblivious and inconsiderate - but they give ME the dirty look once they finally heard me!!! Are you friggin' kidding me? common sense people.

(3) no Slayer.😀

im more of a "blast my earphones.. but only in 1 ear" kind of a guy. I still hear whats around.

Funny, there is a post on here I said that riding with an ipod on is a bad move. (in so many words...)

ive evolved.

Also my bro and his gf always have there ipods on while snowboarding down a mountain. From what ive heard with all the out of control beginners and foreigners(asians mostly) i dont see how you can just tune everything out. I sure dont want to get taken out by someone like that. I have bad knees and ankles as it is.

So once again imo any outdoors sports being done while blasting music is just asking to get hurt by not paying attenion.
