Hayes Dominion A4's

$260 ish bucks and he will have much better brakes by just getting the levers. Cheapest a4’s I have seen were $200 per brake.
I did consider getting the RSC's instead since I do like that modulation but I found a pretty good deal on a set of Dominions plus the brake rub on the rear is driving me mad

Lots of things can cause brake rub. I use the icetech rotors that are thicker and will rub easier. Start with getting these.

Alignment tools really help

I realized I stopped having annoying brake rub when I switched to 2.0mm Magura rotors as they don't seem to get a slight bend in them when I bounce them off things. Plus it's nice having the smaller pad contact distance.

Do they make thick icetech rotors now? I thought all Shimano rotors were 1.8mm?

Another vote for the Dominion A4s. Initial setup and bleed was more involved than other brakes; you need to follow the procedure step-by-step and not skip anything, even if you think it's not necessary. But they're absolutely fantastic brakes. Smoothest lever action I've felt of any brake I've ever ridden. Ever. Plenty of power and excellent modulation.

The only downside is potential pad rub. The design doesn't leave much space between the pads and rotors, so getting the caliper aligned correctly is key. Even with near perfect alignment I deal with a tiny bit of rubbing sometimes when I lean the bike over far enough and weight the outside pedal. I've read similar feedback from others. Even with the rubbing I'd still ride these over anything from SRAM or Shimano.

This may help

These are on sale for $299 here. Some people got it even lower with a 5% coupon if you can make it work.

Already purchased and installed them! Set-up was an absolutely pain but they're on my Stumpjumper EVO now. The sheer power is what stands out to me the most - it's incredible just how quickly they can slow me down on the trail.

Wow, great price. They would be on my build list if I were cobbling together a new bike. Pretty happy with the Hope and TRP brakes I'm using now.

Good deal! I updated my Code rc’s with some Code ultimate levers instead. With sram brakes all the upgrades are in the levers for the code and guide brakes.

That might be noticeably better, however the Dominions are in another league. Code user for as long as I can remember, but switched to Dominions last year and they are just better in every possible way with the exception of being somewhat finicky to setup without rubbing.
