Hardtail in Diablo Park

So a friend of mine wants to take his crusty old walmart special mtb down to Diablo Park so he can fly and have his bike wreck so that his wifey will finally let him buy a new bike .. I'd like to go see that happen so I want to ride too.

Coming out of the roadie/tri scene (im still new to mtb's) .. what's the etiquette on bringing my 29er HT when everything is DH including rentals?

Frowned upon?

Good to go?

They will give you the stink eye

I don't reccomend it but you will live on the really well groomed stuff and the tame rock gardens. Just don't take any drops, have a bashguard, lower your seat and get your ass back. Check it out with the HT. The terrain isn't much different then the gnarly north trails. Just be careful and know your limits. Have fun!

Yeah, i'm okay with stink eye as long as they let me ride.

As for my buddy, I think we'll have to rattle can his bike. It is a FS afterall, so maybe we can sneak it in as a DH.

I think those Wally-World bikes are heavier than most of the DH rigs! For safety's sake I say don't do it. Those bikes break on dirt jumps. :getsome:

No problemo because my original post stated he definitely needs it to break. Wifey will not let him get a new toy because the wally world special still runs. So we gotta prove that it broke doing something mtb's are supposed to be doing. And we can't just go ahead and ride into walls with it .. she'll know.

Give your friends bike away to someone who could use it and tell his wife it was stolen.

Better yet, run it over with your car and then punch him in the face and tell her he crashed.

I would be more worried about your friend not making it out alive. Walmart bikes are not trail worthy for some of the tamest parks, he could get really hurt trying to break his bike at Diablo.

edit: I like sixseven's plan a bunch.

no need to go to diablo .. it won't survive a day pedaling around ringwood, waway, sourlands, etc..

I see where you're coming from but your friend could get serously injured on that bike. Leave it in front of the mall unlocked or he can buy a new bike and tell his wife it's a demo he's borrowing from the shop. (I don't think anyone here has ever done that)🙄

Thanks .. we'll (or rather he'll) take his chances on it.

As a matter of fact, it did get hit by a car and the damn thing still rolls true. It seems befitting since it wants to be tough.

I can't speak for anyone, but he already knows how is bike is and he knows what he's getting into. And as I type this he's laughing because he just read this thread.

So thanks all for the concerns!

Soundz, Walter, & myself are just clearing ourselves of any liability when your bud gets "Murdered In The Face"tm. at Diablo by his bike and his wife sicks the lawyers on us😉

duly noted. on the plus side i'll take lots of pics.

it's not like the guy is 100% into breaking it .. He really wants to bike diablo. Times are rough for him .. money doesn't come around for personal things like this so he's making due with what he's got. Its easy for you guys to say to buy a new bike .. quality bikes don't come cheap.
The guy has a bike that didn't come from one of the many fine dedicated bike shops here .. okay. It doesn't necessarily mean its all garbage. The bikes held up for a couple of years now going through some crusty sht.

I understand you're point on working with some of the parks and such, but the last time i checked none of the parks required me to have a bike with a Gary Fisher, Cannondale, etc label on it. By no means are we going out there to wreck shop or anything .. just trying to have fun with what we have - be it not anything as nice as what you guys are running.

Besides, this thread isn't useless. I made it because I was asking if it was alright to run my 29er in the area.

You'll be fine with your 29'r there. I started riding that place before it was Diablo with my trek 6000 with my sweet judy 100 fork. HAd a blast . a bunch of flats and a bunch of oil from the Judy. The walmart bike may not make it but , oh well, stick to the green and blue trails, avoid the black diamonds. And last time I checked , you pay, you sign waiver, you ride Diablo.
