Got lost

hey guys,
This may sound stupid but It was my first time ever on a trail and I decided to go to 6MR by myself. I started off the parking lot on route 27 the red line trail. Any suggestions on how to follow the trail? I didn't see any markers is there somewhere I'm supposed to be looking at during the run I may have missed? I ended up exiting to a day camp. I just exited that way I did not want to go back into the trails to get lost even more.

Any help would be appreciated

Ha one of the first times I rode there I ended up in that camp, just turned around tho back to the power line clearing. Start from the canal road lot next time and do the blue, red, white, red loop. Easy peesy

this happened to me once, think i know exactly where you missed a left turn on to the red trail head. Probably went straight. I think there's a big boulder on the right before the red trail marker. Someone who's there more often could likely confirm.

Just say the time and I'll be there can't wait!

Welcome CL! check in often.

great riding in the area - you'll be able to navigate the parks in no time at all...

Iggy be the man! he also can help with lawn problems via this forum.....

trick to starting on the 27 side is when you come to a "fork" stay to the left. At the very beginning the logical choice would be head strait but you need to turn left. i believe there is a red trail marker at that junction too. after that the trails are pretty well marked and self explanatory.

Getting lost at 6Mile is one of those "right of passage" kind of things. It's much easier than most believe, but I promise you, after a few rides you'll be laughing about the whole thing. That being said, on my ride yesterday I had to help a family get oriented so they could get out. The father had a mechanical and all they wanted to do was get out but got disoriented at the rouge intersection by the obstacle on red after the red orange split.

I also got a hiker situated on blue by the netting on the same ride.

So @Chris lizardo, it's NOT stupid, it does happen here quite a bit. As you spend more time on the forum you'll occasionally see requests from @jdog to help close down rouge trails.... This is just one of the many reasons why we need to do so.

Try Maprika app...

Funny you mentioned it. The family DID have Maprika but hadn't used it prior to going out... and well... they couldn't make it work.

One of the things I did was help them with it. They had taken a picture and named it six mile. When selecting a map they accidentally picked the picture....so it was basically useless to them. Once I got the map up for them you could see the relief in his wife's eyes. Helped make my instructions visually understandable. So yes +1 on Maprika, just make sure you are actually navigating while you still know where you are the first time.

There's a camp site at 6 Mile? Huh, never knew that...

I'll be at the MTBNJ group ride if there will be angry trail runners to piss off..... 😛
