Here's a few more shots of the Vintage bikes. The Big Foot 6x was insane!! Wider footprint than a modern fat bike but weighed like 100 pounds. The idea was to have a taller wheel sandwiched in between 2 smaller ones so the bike would ride fast in sections where the trail was hard and then that wheel would sink into the snow and the other 2 would float in the softer stuff. Also had weird ball extension things so you could sit straight up during the long straight parts and stretch out a bit. Super cool, I so want to build a vintage fatty now!!

So how did that Bigfoot bike work, then? Are those three wheels locked togetehr such that they spin together all the time or can they spin independently? Definitely an interesting looking machine!

By the way, congrats on your podium!

Looks like it might have been a bitch to deal with a flat tire on the trails with one of those setups.
Good point because it looks like the 2 and 3 rims are laced together into a single wheel unit. I would have to assume they were running tubes, not tubeless and so more prone to flats.

Jim - Did you go to a restaurant called Humpy's in Anchorage? Went there on our honeymoon, great food.
I went to some sub place and a vegan place. It's not easy being a Vegetarian in Alaska. It's even harder on the trail. I'll need to carry a full race worth of food from the start next year.

Congrats and welcome to NJ.
Great pics; gotta love the springy stem on Bigfoot.

Need to take the edge off peddling around SIX TIRES. Holy Fock!

No drop bags at checkpoints?

There are 2 drops. Depending on conditions that may be fine. This year for example would've been fine. In 2012 it took the leaders 2 days just to get to Winter Lake. Conditions change in the blink of an eye in this race which is one of the reasons it's so difficult.

Does your 3rd place get you into next years event, or do you have to wait and see who else signs up?

I did everything by the book. I was nice to everyone, followed all the rules, and kept myself out of trouble. That's what Kathi is mostly looking for, not the fastest, but someone she doesn't have to worry about out there. She's now seen me hold my own in person twice so it should be a done deal. And technically, now I'm a Veteran and will get to Register a month before the general public.

Day#2 - Saturday.

Rob got in late Friday night sometime. I was out like kraut at Sean's when he got in. He sleeps like 4 hours a night though so he was still up before me. Christine made us a sweet breakfast before we headed into town for the Racer's Meeting at the Westmark. Despite Sean giving us pretty simple directions, we managed to get lost. Luckily Anchorage isn't that big so we were only a few blocks off. They were having a parade for the Fur Rondy so we had to keep dipping up and down different streets to get around and over to the Hotel, it was sorta hysterical.

Kathi went over all the rules and race things. Explained to us noobs what folks in the bush are like and to adjust our expectations accordingly. Basically, these are the Checkpoints, nobody cares how you get there but you're completely on your own.

Afterwards Rob and I went into town for some lunch before taking the icy death bike path back to Sean's.

There we did our final prep and pack before another sick home cooked meal.

i think its awesome you guys were able to goto a vegan place in alaska, when im technically in nyc "the biggest city in the world" and we dont even have a single vegetarian place

Congrats on an awesome adventure, we're all waiting on the edge of our seat for the rest of the recap!

I know this doesn't help you very much, but my wife and I have eaten at M.O.B. in Brooklyn and it was really excellent! Might be worth a trip sometime, although I suspect Manhattan and Brooklyn have many other good vegetarian places as well. http://www.mob-usa.com/
