God I love Craigslist.......

My guess is that it's a fake ad and when you contact the guy he will tell you it's stolen but an amazing deal. And he will make up some crazy story that is white collar believable about how he happened upon the bike from some rich guy who is an asshole. And you will say you're going to buy it, then in the end it will turn out to be 1 of the 45,000 social experiments that people do and then post to Upworthy on Facebook to show the world just how awesome & clever they are and just how f'ed up our society is and how much of a dirtbag you are. And in the end you won't get the bike but that guy will have made a video that 2800 people will watch and he will feel good about himself until he needs to go back to work on Monday like the rest of the sheep and then it won't seem so amazing anymore.

Well, email the seller and say, "I'm very interested in the bike, but I need the serial number off the frame so that I can have the local police check their database to make sure it's not stolen." If they don't email you back, it's probably stolen.

Can also check it with Cervelo to see if the frame is counterfeit

Both fair enough ideas.

That's...a helluva scenario. It's probably the usual "yeah, the bike/car/wallet/plutonium is in secure storage in CA/NC/HI and we will use Paypal to ensure a safe transaction for both parties".

But those guys don't normally have a sense of humor, this one did.

there is no front license plate on the car in the background. not conclusive that it isn't nj, not really a spring time leaf pattern on the ground either....

checked up at HG, and they don't have an R5 on the recent theft list....

collecting cyclist email addresses???

Good call on the no front plate. This gives me an idea.

I emailed the guy, we'll see if he replies.

Pics do suck, for sure.

So I got a reply at 3:57am. Obviously a scam. I think they probably just picked this ad off CL and took the copy word for word, then just changed the price from like $6000 to $1800. This is what I originally said:

Hey, I'm interested in this but it looks too good to be true. Why you selling this so cheap?

Thanks,
Norm

The response:

Hello,

Thank you for your email regarding my bike. It's still available,
and it's in perfect condition without any damages. I am firm on price since this is a
fair price for a bike like this one.I don't accept any trades!
If you want to buy it i am waiting for your email at louisette.orlando@gmail.com

Thank you!
Louisette Orlando

I'll reply and see where this goes. Likely an African bank account...

dont be so quick to dismiss

Hey back off that's mine!!! 😉

Hi,
Thanks for being interested in buying my Cervelo R5 56cm Dura Ace Reynolds carbon wheels road bike bicycle .
I will start my email by telling you that I'm currently out of country so pick up isn't an option. The bike is as described, in perfect condition and will be delivered at your home address. Total price will be $1,150.00 and the transaction will be made only through eBay because i am not in the country anymore and this way it's safer for both . Right now I'm in United Kingdom, just arrived here 3 days ago. Before I left I found a buyer and I had everything arranged. I paid for the shipping and almost sent it to him. But yesterday the buyer that I had asked me to wait another 4 weeks because he suddenly had other priorities and he is out of money for the moment. I can't wait this long as I'm in United Kingdom for 3 days now and i really need the money, I am in the moving process, changing the work place and everything. A major issue is that if you want to buy my bike you really need to have the money ready for it.
If you are interested reply me for further instructions on how will you be able to get possession of the bike .
I am waiting for your answer.

Warmest regards,
Louisette Orlando

Ask if he will trade for a lawnmower, broken boat trailer and a grill. Throw in $500 cash and tell him you will ship.

Dave, step off!

To which I reply:

Hey Louisette,

I would love to PayPal you the money but I think $1150 is way too low. Maybe I can make it $5000 so that you don't feel like I'm taking advantage of you. If anyone comes along I would expect you to tell them that the bike is spoken for. Where in the UK are you? My family is from the UK and I have at least 50 relatives all over the country. I will happily have them hand-deliver the money to you in exchange for the bike. Do you have the bike in your possession? Can you take a picture of it and send it to me? I'm getting excited to ride this. Send me a pic and let me know where you are so I can have one of my relatives bring you cash. Don't worry, the bills will be unmarked.

Take care,
Norm

Life was so much simpler in the good old days when Craig's List was just about sex and murder. The scammers have ruined that ethos.

I love it. A few years back I decided to play along with a "Barister" of some sort. We went back and forth for a while until I got bored and told him I knew he was a scammer from the beginning and that I was just wasting his time and giving him false hope because I was I had nothing else better to do and because he was a douche.
