disconnecting at the transfer case would add parasitic drag.

sure does, but next time you jack the truck up (awd is a different animal) spin one wheel and watch, either the driveshaft of the other wheel will turn. I believe they stopped disconnecting the hubs because it would starve the front diff of the continuous lubrication provided by moving through the oil and
