Gas powered bikes?

Is that normal for a bike to lurch forward slightly when starter button is pressed? After the start it is fine and not trying to lurch until I release the clutch halfway. (Honda CRF450L I got used). Thanks!

TLDR: No, it’s not normal.

If you’re starting in gear with the clutch pulled, you should open the clutch and see if it’s notched. Also could be if the wrong oil is in it which can cause clutch drag, which isn’t good because that can cause clutch glazing.

If it makes you feel any better I kinda regret not buying your V-strom.

I agree it’s not the cutting edge of sport tech but it’s more the looks and sound. IMHO one the best looking bikes ever. I’m looking at it like a neglected Ferrari which is never a good idea. Plus the guy probably wants real money for it. Sigh. Such a shame to let something like that sit and rot.
Based on how rusty the chain and rotor are, it does not look like the owner cares. Low ball offer?

$1000 clams? the guy definitely had some used car salesman vibe going and stated “ I’ve got a bottom line number in mind otherwise I’ll just keep it.”
I suppose it can’t hurt to ask but the dude was downright oily.

When looking over the bike, what is the total restore cost vs getting a used one that has been taken care of?

Good question and one I've been thinking about. They don't come up often and the ones that do are more likely immaculate garage queens. Nice ones are $6000-12000. There's a wadded newer one on CL for $4000.00.
Long story short, the numbers could ultimately work in my favor although it's still really high miles for the platform. I'm more afraid of out of production or exorbitant part costs. Plus it would probably be years before it's a runner.

100% illogical decisions are sometimes the best. My stupid decision was finalized today and it is this used W800 Cafe. Everything I hoped for; vibrations, feel, and sound. Just shy of an 800cc 360 degree crank vertical twin with bevel drive. The fairing surprisingly worked on 287. This bike is purely for motoring. Push too hard and it will start to bounce in a corner, Feels just like some of the bikes I’ve restored from the 70s. Previous owner even installed the center stand which is a win.

So. My neighbor (knows nothing about motorcycles) comes over and says
"Hey, I saw a yellow motorcycle sitting outside over at the apartments."
"K"
"It said Ducati on it"
"Oh yeah?"
"it says 748 on the side"
"Wait, what?"
So it's a 2000-2002 era 748. Been sitting outside, uncovered for years. 33,000 miles. Monoposto S. It probably needs everything, Every body panel has some nonsense, tank is likely full of vanish or rust, tires battery etc, fork seals are bad to the point of rusting apart, and this generation of motor has known problems besides just the belt work. Guy bought it new and "knows what he has".
They're worth decent money in nice shape but it's far from it right now. I didn't even make him an offer although a grand or two is all I'd pay. I'd love to have it, bucket list bike for me and I work at a body shop so paint/body ain't bad, but it could be a huge project if the motor is junk.
What say you all?
You don't want it at any price. My friend Tom gave another friend a 996 that had not been ridden in probably 15 years but was at least garaged that whole time. Recipient friend is a professional mechanic of all kinds of Euro cars, new and old. He told me it needed "everything". Last I heard, he had been trying for months to find a decent/not astronomically priced gas tank. I'm not even sure he'll come out ahead at free-fifty-free because the bike was nothing special before being left to rot. Just a decent runner with a few dings here and there.

I was actually a few minutes late holding up my hand and I'm glad I was. It put bad ideas in my head though, and now I own four bikes.

This is horrifying. And what was running through my head when I declined to make an offer.

i agree the platform is a little out of date but I always dug the looks.

popped my commute cherry 60miles one way to the big apple. A little amateur lane splitting at GWB. Some cruisers showed me how that’s done. Nj hwy was fine. Only almost got run over once in NYC. Driver rolled through his red light and I made a left on green. I pulled up next to him and grilled him and he denied running the red. Thank goodness my time on the city streets is limited. Some numbness after 1.5h. Will try some adjustments and looking for a new seat!

Seat Concepts is your friend.

I’m assuming you went with a backpack or did you strap stuff to the bike?
