anyone ride with a five.ten shoe? i'm thinking about picking up the freerider shoe. i use vans now, is there really that much of a difference from vans to 5.10s? after reading some mtbr reviews/threads, i am getting a little bit of the feeling that the 5.10 shoes are like 29ers (ya know, they make your breakfast, open your beer for you, maybe a little tug here and there) but love ain't all true.

i'm a rock climber, and I know the stealth rubber well - sticky stuff, i just wanted to get some opinions from the peanut gallery. i'm on the cusp of buying some new shoes, and was thinking of dropping the extra $20 on some five.tens versus picking up another pair of whips.

Last year after I had knee surgery I switched to riding flats and five-tens for a few months. I can verify that they are super grippy and one of the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. Not just bike shoes, but any shoe or sneaker I've ever owned. I had an older pair of 661 BMX style shoes that were SPD compatible and the rubber on those definitely was not as grippy as the five-tens. I'd recommend them.

They are super comfortable, sticky and durable.

I haven't worn any vans in a long time, I always had issues with the foot bed feeling way to flat.

The Five tens have a generous amount of padding around the collar which is nice too. They are built shit tough, longest lasting sneaker I have ever owned.

Haven't gotten a tug yet but anything is possible.

Everyone I know who rides them loves them for freeride/dh use. If you ride DH with flats, you NEED 5.10's. Unfortunately they don't make them in my size (14), so I don't have that option.

For dirt jumping, a lot of the guys have moved away from them because they're actually *too* grippy and it's hard to move your feet around on the pedals or get your foot off for no-footers.

convinced, i pulled the trigger and picked up a pair. the hideous burgundy color. they feel comfy. just need the new ride to come in (currently in shipment) and i'm all set.
