Emerging Bike Technology

Yes. For those less abled than some of us to get off of our dependence on cars. It's a great idea.

I ask," Is there a need?"...

Absolutely if we can eliminate more cars out NYC alone and get others to be peeked in interest towards cycling in some way, shape or form is good. Not only for the environment but for the failing health of our country. Is this breakthrough technology for you or me as avid cyclist, not all but reality is it's not targeted for us as I see it...

kinda dumb. would be better if it was a flywheel. plus you could go flying down a hill, hit the brakes, and your bike would stand up straight for like a 1/2 hour on it's own gyroscope.
would suck for cornering though

I just don't see this wheel getting people over the hump of riding their bikes in not so ideal conditions...

I wouldn't mind some battery assist, I would honestly ride to work pretty often if I had that.
I only need maybe 5 or 10 minutes worth, to get me over the hills without sweating so I don't have to showe at work.

Again I'll put it my own experiences I work in Manhattan and there are not just a couple but many folks I work with who live right across a bridge or up town who won't use a bus or subway that they have access to. They will drive near job site and pay for parking. If they can use a bike without effort and find cheap to no cost parking (some buildings now are supplying indoor parking for bikes) it just may stop a few cars. Lets face the fact the air quality is in a pretty poor state and I for one would like to see any kind of improvement for our children. Nyers in general will be the first to buy into anything that makes them hip anyway.😎

Indeed, so lets start tearing down some of those 40-50 year old buildings that account for close to 45% on green house gases coming out of the city...Joke🙂

As for NEEDING this contraption on a bike,I don't think so... If I can ride my bike without one so can the next person...It maybe a motivating piece but not a necessary one🙂

OK so one thing is for certain we agree to disagree 😀
On a side note is that if you noticed in the last ten years those buildings you speak of were in fact being torn down or referbed to be more environmentally friendly until the shit economy hit. I can say that the sky ways have much more clarity then even 15 years ago. I have seen some of the best city views working in high rises the last 20+ years and there use to be a heavy brown layer that would surround the bay areas towards brooklyn and surrounding boros. They are not there, same goes looking out towards Newark Airport, so things are getting better.

New Yorkers need to take a deep look at cities like Colorado Springs or Portland or Seattle and try to emulate their attitudes towards healthy living and most importantly BEING OUTSIDE... That will get more on bicycles then this silly contraption😀

FWIW I was working in Manhattan today and was surprised to see as many bikes as I did navigating the slushy streets. Skinny tired fixies too!

One thing I've noticed is the amount of those bikes with electric or small gas motors. As cyclists we laugh at these innovations as a silly waste of money but some of them hold some merit for Joe Commuter/Delivery/Messenger guy.

Interesting from a technical standpoint to see the KERS tech applied to bikes though.

Might be good for older folks, or people who are just out for a fun ride.
Like a mim with a kid in tow...

We would have made great progress when people ride their bikes because they are health conscious and environmentally savvy.... Not because someone has made it easier for them to ride one😀

Let’s face it Americans are overweight and in poor heath because of the ease and convenience technology has afforded us. While most on this site love a challenging ride and the benefits we are the minority. If you build ease of use, convenience, and make it affordable people will be all over it like flies on sh*t. Yes, American will continue to be fat pigs but at least the minority will breathe easier. IMHO

i feel like everybody has they're own valid point; as trial riders, i think it's a bad idea because we should be able to use our own power to get up the hils and climbs we face, and if we get use to having a boost during those tough climbs, we may get too comfortable with it naturally; as far as other people that would use it for they're commute or exercise, it would deffinately help take cars off the road and make the air cleaner, (which benefits us all), but people may get soo comfortable with that luxury that they will use it as soon as the going gets just a little tough, which wouldn't help as much as the majority of the people in this country need.

It simply has it's pro's and con's that can be supported with different reason, the only new problem i can see is all the effort it's going to take to find places for all these people to put they're new bikes? (granted you would need something much less than a parking lot); but i'm not up to date on the city and if they already have, or would be able to, install areas for temporary storage of all these bikes when people are at work.

Well, and the gawd awful crap that is used to produce our food so it tastes good and is cheap. S'pose that is technology too...
