Dry January 2025 (The Sober Thread)

I just started working again back in December, after being unemployed for two years, and went to a company holiday party with open bar in Metuchen. Everyone had a drink in hand and they didn't have NA options. Thought about holding a beer for show, instead just ordered a club soda with lime. Didn't bother me at all, though I've been told I'm more "fun" when drinking, I'm not going back. The sleeping late and hangovers are the things don't miss, though oddly I haven't lost any weight.

This reminds me my company actually had an NA pilsner as an option this year which was pretty cool. I can't remember which it was because it wasn't particularly good. I only had one and went back to Coca Cola's. They're becoming more and more prevalent around...Sterling Hotel had one as well in their beer garden which is where we have monthly happy hour.

Today was the first day I really craved a beer, not quite sure what put me over the edge but it quickly subsided. More surprising was that we went to visit some beer loving friends last night. Under "normal" circumstances there would have been several quality beers consumed, but the Mrs and I agreed that we did not feel the desire to do so at any point in the night. It was also nice to be free of the mental gymnastics of "can I get away with 1 more and still be a responsible driver". In the end, I don't feel like I had any less fun without a drink.

It’s the snow. At least for me it was. You aren’t going anywhere so naturally you have a beer or 4.
I really don’t like drinking in front of my kids when we’re stuck inside so it’s an easy pass for me nowadays.
Probably right RE the snow, particularly with being cooped up in the house with 2 feral kids lol

I also agree about drinking in front of the kids, it’s getting to the point where it’s normalizing the behavior for them. It’s a little cringe inducing when your 4yo starts taking about your beer.

Society normalizes alcohol to an absurd degree. There’s a comic out there that makes this great point. If you tell people at parties you don’t drink, it’s like a Spanish Inquisition. If you were to tell these same people you don’t drink water, they would just say, “oh, ok.”

Athletic is still probably my favorite for IPAs. Lmk what you think about Daypack

I've tried several flavors of the Daypack seltzers, and they are all really good. That said, I wouldn't go out of my way to buy them, as they probably aren't any better than whatever seltzer you normally like. They say they are infused with hop oil, but they just taste like any other good seltzer to me. I'll probably get more if I place another online order from Athletic just because why not, but I wouldn't just place an order for the seltzers if I wasn't also ordering fake beers.
