Do you wear protection?

When things get rocky AND technical we feel more comfortable riding knowing that we will be able to make it to work on Monday to help suport our Mountain Tandem Bike Habit! We use the Six Six One XC Evo soft padded elbow & knee pads. We don't feel dorky doing this for two reasons....we are both over 50 and we ride a Mountain Tandem in the woods on any trail that we can find.

We were at Deer Park today and had a blast on our Screamcycle with our daughter & her boyfriend on their Dirt Devil Tandem.
We prefer riding in our North End of NJ at KVSP, Deer Park, Chimeny Rock, Stephens & LM ...oh and the Wharthog Trail.

I wouldn't mind seeing some pics of your bike. Can't see much in the avatar.

Here's a pic of us on our Screamcycle the Orange Ventana ECDM full suspenion mountain tandem at KVSP on a low long log pile with our knee pads on.
Then there's a pic of us on our Slimecycle the Green Fandango 29R Hardtail mounta tandem at Stephen's on a taller log pile with our knee & arm pads on.
As you can see both bikes also "wear" protection....a "skid plate for the bottom to slide on so as to protect the bottom tube that I made at home.

I never thought i would think a tandem was cool but that's a cool tandem.

As far as the pads go I never wore pads before but I just recently broke a rib and bruised my chest plate. So I went out and got a full face and a chest protector. I don't care how dorky I look I don't want to break another rib.

I'm a helmet and gloves guy for most XC trials, I could use knee/elbows for jungle, but I only have my pressure suit and DH shin/knee pads, which don't pedal very well.

The pressure suit i have from 661 is really cumbersome, I can't imagine riding XC with it, and will probably stop riding DH with it once i get a little better.

I have to put it out there that everything I've bought from Troy Lee has fallen apart in very short order, my shin pads (lopes model from TLD) came missing one of the velcro tabs that holds them down, and I have a pair of gloves that were amazing when new but only lasted a few weeks where as fox gloves will normally last me a season.

used to wear roach leg and arm protectiion if there was a lot of downhill stuff, whilst on a stag do in Spain we were doing 3 hr downhill rides, not world cup stuff but enough to keep you on your toes but we still had the best man break both wrists, the bigger problem was these very large thorns and the guards kept us thorn puncture free.

My gear

I always ride with a Helmet ( Giro Xen at the moment), gloves of some sort and glasses. Most of the time I ride with Launch forearm/elbow pads from Fox. They have saved me several times from just brushing tree limbs out of the way, to full on impact with tree trunks or the ground. Just last Friday I took a spill at Chimney Rock and landed right on my elbow. No harm done. I also have the matching shin/knee pads but do not wear them as they chafe to much, I don't have that problem with the arms though.

My picture has me riding without them at last years KOH... wish I had them because I went over the handlebars and scraped up my arm something fierce...

I have about 4-5 rides with "protection" and every time I was able to do an obstacle that I was previously unable to do. A lot of this is mental, but if the protection helps with it, it is doing it's job. For me, just learning, buying this equipment was a good idea. I love the knee/shin pads.
