Crankset recommendations for 1x9

What do you guys recommend for a 1x9 setup?

I was planning on getting the shimano xt M770... but will money be wasted on chainrings that i'm just going to take off? (I have a 32T Surly SS ring to use).

Would I be better off getting a SS crank off the bat, like the Race Face Deus?

I was thinking of going 1x9 to but I was told that you need a chain guide. Is that true?

What size ring you going with?

That is true.. but I can get the Saint crank/BB for the same price as the XT crankset. I have no use for the XT chainrings... so i could try selling them, but why not avoid the hassle? Isn't the Saint lighter than the XT (not including the chainrings and bash guard)?

You'll want some form of chainguide. There's quite a few options out there.

I run a 32 tooth chainring.
