cost of college

Funny my upper body was in the best shape of my life during fencing season because they made us do so many pushups and situps. My right arm was twice as big as my left. And I was able to break 2x4's with my thumb and index finger.
Video plz.

I've heard from a few parents that they and their kids didn't like the vibe at RPI. It's on the short list for most to visit, but I don't remember any who eventually ended up going.
It's a really good school, there are no two ways about it. The campus has expanded and the city area of Troy is coming up. Because it's very engineering-centric, the student body is heavily weighted towards the testosterone side (a few years ago, it was a 7:1 ratio). One of the big problems in our scenario was the school is very Aero-focused. Our son want's to get into prosthetics, but he loved the school and was talked into it by a couple of professors. Second, I never felt guidance was really helping him at all. He had a capstone project (almost all engineering schools do), but once again, not in his area, so it was barely useful. On the back end, the professors have been infinitely helpful with letters of recommendation even two years out.

I enjoyed going up there to catch concerts in the new hall and hockey games.

This was my go-to board breaking demo in TKD tests (I don't know why they call it a 1" punch when it's really 3-4")

Not about college but high school tutoring. Honors physics needed at the moment and my wife is getting quotes of $125 an hour. Is that the going rate for tutoring? That's about the same as music and ski lessons so maybe not so bad. This cost of preparing for college is getting worst than writing checks when they are already in. At least I no longer need to scrutinize each charge...

pay $60/hr for general tutoring in english composition (which means writing papers in all the classes that require them)

damn, i should learn how to connect with humans - i could do this! 😀

I'm Currently am engineering student, getting a late start (25 years old), luckily I'm fortunate enough for my parents to pay for it, but I have to pay up front and won't get reimbursed if my garde is less than a B. (For any parents that want to be able to pay for their child's education while still teaching the lesson of a hard earned dollar, this is the way to go, my grades have never been better) 2 years of community college saves a lot of money, (im paying roughly 5k/year with about $200/credit) and if you're near rvcc, it's consistently ranked as one of the best community colleges in the country, I have some fantastic teachers this semester, also not being the slacker I was at age 18 helped a lot

I'm in analytical physics 1 and calc 2, don't have a job and can tutor for less than what you'd pay anywhere else

Hey @qclabrat did any of those books say anything about how to get a school to offer up some money when they haven’t so far? My son has offers of $10-17k/yr but nothing from the school he really wants to attend.

not really, I know its a waiting game for some, when does he need to make a decision?

Financial Aid is such a crapshoot. My friend's eldest daughter is at Drexel, they offer about 20% for a slightly above average student. Their other (freakishly intelligent) daughter just got accepted to her first choice (Northeastern) and they are offering like 3%. Makes no sense, but they hold all the cards, what you gonna do but pay?

Me Imma gunna get a job as the janitor at RU. Yeah, that the ticket. Sanitation Engineering Specialist, 1st class.

My buddy's son got into his dream school, GW, as early decision. They knew it was expensive but no way his average son was getting in. To their surprise the minority card pulled it's weight, my friend is Latino, and now they are stuck with a $75K a year bill after aid. Being right in the middle of middle class for NJ, they have not idea where they will get the money.

Oh yeah, I mentioned CC to my daughter, she wept like a newborn, guess that's not an option now...

A relative had a free ride to Rutgers but ended up going to Tufts with zero aid. Just like their sports programs, they have trouble retaining talent locally.
We are now talking up Rutgers as the benchmark, instead of using it as a "safe" school. I think too many parents start that way. "If you don't get into ....... at least you have Rutgers as a back up". We are try to change it around, "if you don't get into Rutgers you have RVCC as backup".

For Sam, RPI was his early decision school. Fin Aid was fair at best. Every time I called I asked if he'd just put the phone down and check under his desk or in the closet in case there were some funds that someone else dropped by mistake. Didn't help.
