Commuting Route Help - Central NJ

So I'm going to try commuting to my job for my first time (from Manville to South Plainfield) and I'm looking at 2 routes that I've never biked before and was hoping some folks would be familiar with the area(s) and be able to help me out. Basically, are there any roads in the routes that should be avoided due to traffic/not enough space/etc. or if there's a better route out there unbeknownst to me?

Thanks much!

Route A - Route 28

Route B - D&R Canal

i ride that area a lot. i'd recommend the D&R ride.

if you are willing to add a half hour to your ride (just about), i'd take the D&R all the way to the landing lane bridge and cut throught the Rutgers campus to hook up with metlars lane. it's definitely a lot more round about, but a majority of your ride will be car free. it'd be about 17 miles one way versus the 12 you have plotted now.

edit:

canal linky

or you can hit my hood:

more road linky

schoolhouse has a great shoulder and new brunswick has bike lanes in most spots.

I'm over in Middlesex and ride this area pretty often. I would take the canal into South Bound Brook, then cross over the bridge to Main street. Stay on Main street as it turns into Lincoln boulevard through middlesex and avoid 28 all together. 28 isn't bad, but Lincoln Boulevard is better. Clarkenstein's all canal route is also a great option if you don't mind the extra distance.

The canal route you posted doesn't look too bad either, but I'm pretty sure Baekeland Ave is a barely used industrial road that is in pretty rough shape.

Somethign like this would probably be solid and keep you out of traffic until you get closer to work route

Thanks SO much guys. I had a blast riding this morning. I went with ChrisRU's route so I could properly gauge the time it takes to get to work. Got there with just enough time to take a baby wipe bath before 8:30 😛

I can't wait to try Clarkenstein's Canal Route. Once I get my pace up I'm definitely going to go for it. It's just so freakin peaceful on the canal in the mornin'

If you want to cut out that icky section of Stelton Road, make the first left when you come off New Brunswick Avenue onto Ruth Place. Quick right and left will dump you onto Carlton Avenue (my street, wave to my GTI). Follow through the light and to the end and it'll hit another New Brunswick Avenue. Make a right. Left onto Tyler Place, right onto Clifton...Much less traffic that way...Or I have another way that'll confuse the crap out of you but involves bike paths and cutting through a park or 2, I'll try to map it out if I can😀

The Carlton Avenue addition looks great. I'll definitely implement that and wave at your GTI too.

I'm interested in seeing that confusing route too if possible
