Columbia Trail Conditions

Rode the trail today from Flanders to califon firehouse. Overall not terrible there was still a dusting of snow all the way to long valley. Then after coffee potter there wasn’t much. The only real bad spots were by the junkyard and then after Xmas tree farm the horses have the first part of the trail all chopped up. Took the road back to skip that section.

figured this was the best spot to share this update I just saw on FB. Not sure of the status today just to be aware:

Friend of mine and well known member of NICA staff lost a toolbag on the CT yesterday.

made a last minute decision to check the trail today.

While it was rideable it wasnt in very good condition with all the frost heave and ice melt. You can also see where it was previously muddy due to many long sections of previous riders on the trail while it was mushy the last few days but now all thats left behind are ruts.

On top of that the parks dept is doing tree removal and cleanup and the whole section between Bartley road trailhead in flanders and coffee potter at Schooleys mtn road has a lot of lumpy bumpy muddy sections from the work trucks and residual debris of the tree removal. The section west of Coffee potter to the Junkyard was better and less damp. It pretty much felt like I was dragging a cinder block behind me for most of the trail. I only went from Flanders to just past the junkyard today and turned back. Needs a lot more foot traffic and hopefully the parks dept will smooth out the rough sections leftover from the tree work.

Only one icy section behind the little development near fairview was easy to go around.

was waiting for @iman29 to chime in - but I drive past a lot of the crossings/trailheads on my way to work. This morning there is still ice/snow on the trail from what I could see in Califon and Flanders.
ha yeah I didnt ride that way this weekend and I forgot to do a drive by yesterday.

it generally takes a little longer to thaw out with all the tree cover. I think if this week warms up like its supposed to it could get better but the sections around the Gorge stay colder so could still be some icy spots. I will do a drive by later this week to check for myself. I don't think I have been on the trail in over 5-6 weeks!

As promised here’s my drive by update. This is from the long valley area where it crosses 4 bridges road.

That at least 4-5” of ice not snow. The trail opening still has a pile of snow I imagine other road crossing might be the same.

I’d say it needs through the weekend to melt and then the rest of next week to dry up enough to not be slogging in quicksand type terrain especially the newer section from Long valley to Califon that has QP type surface.
