Chain Wax Discussion thread

Every time I hear the Silca dude speak or go on their website I get the biggest snake oil vibes from them.
Some of their products are legit (Impero frame pump, standard track pump), most are slightly retouched stuff available elsewhere for a ton less.

You can make your own conclusions as necessary.

I’m still scratching my head. So, yesterday I pulled my may fat bike chain, sprayed it down with Boeshield, hung it up to dry overnight, then wiped it down and installed this morning. Cost = one quick link.

Think I'm sold on waxing. Dry dusty conditions, this is what the drivetrain looks like post ride. Silca Super Secret.

Convinced to try this on my geared bike, 10 speed. Previous owner used a dry lube and I like the way the drivetrain is quieter and cleaner. I’ve always used wet lube before. Biggest peeve with it is the dust(sand!) that gets attached to it on a ride. One splash of water and you’re listening to your drivetrain being ground up for the next mile or so. Kinda ruins the peaceful ride in the woods for a spell. Can’t do acetone though, near instant migraine trigger. Will have to try mineral spirits and denatured alcohol.

My previous solution to avoid hearing wet sandy chain grinding on the gear next to it was to get a single speed fat bike. Cheaper chains, just replace every 500-800 miles with another bmx or 8 speed chain once they stretched. The factory grease usually stayed intact for those miles, would just spray off the bike and dry it. I think there’s glue in that stuff.

No grease!

In prep for a road trip later this week I was test fitting the bikes to the rack w/ a security chain I just bought. On my gravel bike I had to run the security chain through the CS and the bike chain. Having no worries of getting everything messy with chain goo was a nice bonus!

I now have 1300 miles on the road bike and around 600 on the mountain. Still impressed with how clean the wax is but on the mtb it can be a pain if you ride in anything remotely wet.

The melt on is far superior and I find lasts 300 miles on the road bike and maybe 200 on the mtb. The drip refresh is ok but lasts half as long and completely disappears if any wet AT ALL

agree, the melt on is far superior.

And the drip on stuff is really easy to use once you get in the habit of doing it. And doing it so it has time to dry.
I recently switched to Silca drip wax on a new chain that I installed. Gotta say, it's very easy to maintain, drivetrain stays super clean and the chain always feels slick. Home run as far as I'm concerned.

My chain was grimy and I didn’t fell like taking it off so I bit the bullet and bought this stuff:

I used very little of it. I left my wheel on and just dripped some on the links. Let it sat 5 minutes and did a few more drips. Waited a couple minutes and lightly brushed it though then hosed off.

Worked pretty freaking good. I dripped some wax on and we’ll see how well it got the gunk out after next ride.
