Car-spotting thread

started the tire kicking for a new 7 seater SUV last weekend. Wifey is ready to get out of minivans after having 8 different Honda odysseys since 2002.

First up is the obvious choice 2025 Pilot. Of course they only had the top level trim “Black edition” on the lot. Wife liked it it’s very odyssey like in terms of interior and driving feel. The top trims have a nicer look with the blacked out wheels and nicer interiors. Kinda pricey like all Hondas are but I am obviously a Honda fanboy.

Then we went next door and drove a Hyundai Palisade. The styling is ok but the first thing she noticed was a bit of extra HP (291 vs 280 in the Pilot). Has a lot of extras in the Limited trim level for a bit less money.

No decisions yet still more shopping to do. Next up is:

Kia Telluride
VW Atlas
Mazda CX90

My current minivan lease is up end of July so I got time and I can always extend it. Plus every dealer wants it and I have about 6-9K equity in it since it only has 26K miles (2023 model).

I hate the car buying game but I’m not bad at it so will see where this lands depending what the wifey decides.

Depending on how much of a trim level you want and or bells and whistles, look at the Subaru Ascent. Every trim comes with the safety features (lane keep assistance, emergency braking, blind spot detection, etc) plus AWD. The turbo 4 is no slouch either.

One thing I forgot to mention, I bought mine from Liberty Subaru in Emerson, New Jersey. Did 100% of the negotiation and ordering online and it was very easy and I was below invoice. If you decide you wanna go this route send me a message and I’ll send you the info for the guy that I worked with.

Correct answer is 3 Corvettes.

One could also join IMBA for the Subaru VIP program. I did this, and it was super convenient and easy. You do have to be a member for at least six months though.

@iman29 If you decide on a Pilot and want a lesser trim, LMK. My buddy got exactly what he wanted at a competitive price within a month from my contact at Clinton Honda. They put his name on an incoming unit that was his first choice color and trim level.

My wife had a very similar hit list (with/ Pilot top choice, also including Subaru since she was upgrading from an Outback), but was striking out. I convinced her to visit our local Acura dealer, and she ended up with/ a fully loaded MDX for less than a mid-level Pilot. I'm not sure how that happened, and I don't care, and she loves it.

And I'm not sure what sort of charm offensive they put on when she goes in for routine service, but she always comes home with the loaner feeling like a queen (I may need to go there and take some charm lessons, I guess).

GF leased an RDX for same money as a loaded CRV. So, definitely more incentives at Acura these days.

48M/12K. $3K down. $512/mo all in for a Tech package. Base was $497.

Thanks.

I used to shop there but had a bad experience with someone I had used previously and gotten 2 other vehicles from and will never give that place my business ever again.

The palisade and the telluride are basically the same car. You just get less chrome and leather with the Kia 🤷‍♂️. Lower purchase price I would guess too.

It sounds like your leasing which would be the preference for those two brands based on my experiences

Yeah I’m also a long time Hyundai owner and the telluride is a bit more popular it seems and she’s been in one but not driven it yet. We only went to see the Palisade because it was literally next door.

This seems to be a feature of car dealerships. After 40 years of buying/leasing vehicles, we have a list.
The sad part is the sales guy was someone I got other vehicles from and got a great deal.

but he screwed me over anyway and sold my car out from under me AFTER we made a deal AND I had a deposit; because he failed to mention i had to take delivery by a certain date which I was unavailable. Just tells me he chased the money and those people probably paid more than the deal I was getting.

Curious, was this during the COVID craze? I vote with my money, too, so I get it. Anyways, I work for the owner and can at least make sure you get treated decently.*

*it's still a car dealership

Thanks.

No it was 3 years ago when I was leasing the current vehicle.

Good to know your connection if we decide to go with a Pilot but that place still wouldn’t be my default choice. Depends on availability of trim level and color choice most likely.
