Car-spotting thread

Has anyone installed or had a Vintage Air system put into their older car? Hear it takes over 50 hours and you need to remove the passenger fender. Kit is 2k but labor can be 4-5k

hmmm,

Well if its this system like for an early mustang? I would say no to 40 hours....maybe 20? Not overly complicated....the unit just gets mounted under the dash.

If its something like this were you are replacing the heaterbox and plumbing AC thru the factory vents? I can see that getting labor intensive. I mean pulling a heater box out on most cars is an ass pain....even on a relatively simple one like my 67, its no fun...Lot going on under the dash and working in there BLOWS. Maybe the guy was making sure he had his time covered.

yeah, it's the latter, for f-bodies you need to remove the fender then the hoses are tucked inside and the vents plumbing I hear is a bigger pita than expected. It's not a highly technical job, just tedious, I don't like doing drivetrain stuff, but this seems like something I can tackle as a winter project. The sure fit system by Vintage Air, keeps the car looking stock. https://www.vintageair.com/updated-1969-camaro-surefit-climate-control-systems/

Also anyone know if these installs are compatible after an engine swap. Hate to think of spending 5k x 2, or are they engine-agnostic?

If you asking how long would I take? Prob 8 hrs. At work we have to completely gut new vehicles to replace the evaporator core. Gm is generous and pays 6. First gen camaro is nothing in comparison.🙂

hey you kept up great - I was surprised your gas lasted that long. We stopped a few minutes after you pulled off and I was down 3/4 of a tank
I reset my consumption gauge before we left and averaged 22mpg. That has to be wrong after chasing a GT350.

Otherwise yeah, I was super impressed by the GTI. First time really ripping for an extended time. Could use a rear sway bar and better tires at some point. The only annoying part is you guys could accelerate and let off the gas to engine brake. When I get off the gas, it stays pegged at the same speed. Zero engine braking. Tore through my pads today, lol. 24k on them though.

that's weird, I love engine braking as it elicits the thunder!

God 6 hours? That's an insult... Anything under the dash should be Hazzard pay.

Walt I love ac more than the internet... Imo it's the greatest things humans have invented outside of dogs.... That said... Old cars like my 67 mustang have tons of vent and proper windows.... They really aren't that bad to drive with no ac.... So while I'd like it in my car, I wouldn't spend the time or money... Maybe power steering, but ac... Eh, the air flow in my car is so good, I don't feel it needs it

Most modern cars are not driveable with the windows open, the wind buffeting is so bad it's like a helicopter inside. Those old cars with vent windows and under dash vents are pretty good, until your stuck in traffic. I remember my parents driving us kids to FL in a '63 Buick with no a/c. Today that would be child endangerment lol
