Can I get a freakin race report?

Roll right from the finish to the bike wash and spend an exorbitant amount of time washing my bike with the weakest hose on earth.

SERIOUSLY, those hoses were sad. I pulled the nozzle off mine and made slightly better pressure with the thumb technique. Great recaps and good work racing.

The name of the game for double weekends is recovery. You don't wanna be going HAM all week long. Think easyier rides and skills M,Tu, Th with a hard workout or WW on Wed and openers Friday. You can't build or sustain these crazy efforts without a little downtime!

all I can manage muster up is a smile of pain.

The smile of pain is all I expect to get from that heckle, a wheelie is a double bonus! Stoked to hear you had an enjoyable first race, hopefully I'll get that wheelie out of you at HPCX!

Thanks for all the tips Matt! I'm starting to realize that now, hopefully it's not too late to avoid burnout.

I've been following a TrainerRoad Cyclocross plan after having major success with their other plans but I definitely started it too late in the summer since the plan is still calling for mid-week 100 TSS workouts right now. I'm going to take it easy this week and hope to hit the sand running at Bubble day 1.

I'll stop by and introduce myself the next time I see you at a race when you aren't having an embro-bomb or yelling about closed off course tape.

Recovery is king!!

Totally forgot to recap the tape detail!
I came around lap one in the SS to the start chute which was still set up for the holeshot. I looked at the corner and went a little cross-eyed when I noticed the u-turn was taped off and there was only about a 2' window open. Needless to say I yelled coming over the S/F line. Not in anger, just in a "yo someone best gedondat."

Which plan are you doing? I've been using the low volume plan as a guide, doing only two (sometimes one) of the weekday workouts on Tues/Thurs, and skipping the third in lieu of racing...

MadisonDan, I'm on cyclocross mid-volume and have also been doing some VO2 work with Andrew and Kate of the Jalapenos on Wednesdays. All of the Tuesday workouts feel insurmountable after a race weekend then Thursday workouts seem irresponsible with so much intensity coming on the following weekend. With one race weekends plus Wednesday, the low-volume looks doable to me.

Interestingly, I was listening to the VeloNews podcast on the way down to Whirlybird on Saturday and they were interviewing a doctor talking about structured training. One point that resonated to me was that training gains are minimal after 2 interval workouts per week and much more can easily lead to burnout. With two race days a weekend plus two tough trainer workouts and a cross practice, that sounds like the perfect recipe for burnout. Usually I'm not a huge fan of VeloNews but their podcast has been great and is only 4 episodes deep and is worth a listen.

Sounds like the mid volume plus Wednesdays is too much... You get stronger from the recoveries (I think). Constant training plus races may be a bit much... Live and learn. Still trying to figure this all out myself too... Two days of HPCX this weekend, followed by a double bubble the weekend after is gonna have lots of hurts in the legs.

Just curious, what time of day are you guys doing TR? I was trying mid volume earlier in the year at night and got killed. I'm pretty sure most of it was health related but I think nighttime just doesn't work for me as I can easily be on the edge of losing energy and popping. I found myself riding the trainer later at night (starting at 7 or 8pm) which is hours after I would normally ride.

Probably starting again once things calm down in life after the cross season, thinking of switching to mornings.

Thought @Norm laid this all out already?

Monday: Off/Recovery
Tuesday: Sprints
Weds: CX Practice/Hard, long race type intervals
Thursday: Recovery
Friday: Openers
Saturday: Race
Sunday: Race

Santapez, my preference is first thing in the morning though Wednesday night cross practice often pushes my Thursday workout to 6PM after work.

Doing 90 minute or less workouts first thing out of bed in the morning allows you to workout in a fasted state which there is some early research* that may show it may improve the training benefit. Also morning workouts mean that there's no excuse to skip a workout after work and you get the added boosted metabolism of a hot engine all day. There is also good research* that shows working out late at night throws off your sleep cycle.

The TrainerRoad podcast talks a lot about these topics and many more useful training tips. A lot of it is geared around following their plans but it's useful to anyone trying to follow a training plan.

*I can't link to "facts" mostly because I'm lazy but if you google a bit, you'll find the peer reviewed stuff.

I try for before work, which means a 4:45am wakeup. FML. I have no problems in the evening, as long as I'm done by around 9:30pm. Mornings are better, but that early wake up can S.A.D.

-I hate waking in mornings. But I think I can fit it in with my work schedule so I'm not doing it at 4:45. I'm going to go with that when I start up once it's just absolutely miserable outside.
-I'm 99% sure I started sleeping like a baby when I stopped riding later at night.
-The TR podcast I will throw on in the background if I'm doing something at 1.5x-speed if I'm sick of other podcasts. Holy crap their knowledge of cross is horrible. They should really not talk about it. It would be similar to myself getting ready to do a crit race and then doing a podcast about crit racing as an expert. It's an interesting podcast but it hammers home the fact that I enjoy riding my bike and that's why I ride, not so I can be on a podium.

Marty Cross 2016 - Men's Cat 4/5 Old-ish Man (40+) Race

Local Race!!!! Whoo hoo..... Only a 30 minute drive with a 9:30am start time. After last weeks tummy issues, and Paella Night with some other Madison parents, I got up a little earlier than I wanted to, just to make sure everything was in proper working order. Feeling good.. nice. Out the house about 7:05, arrive 7:40ish. @Harry Hamilton 's already there. Spots in the upper lot, near the pit area. Ooof... it's a little chilly.

Get bike down, adjust tire pressure on bike and pit wheels, drop wheels in pit, shoes and helmet on - course inspection time! Did two laps.
Similar to years past, but different. Eric, Vic, and the boys made more use of the hills this year down between the barn and the road. Usual leafy spots down at the bottom by the barn, back up, down, up, down past the barn to the lower field area. Little rocky/rooty along the side, not too bad, then the downhill sweeping left, some other bits and pieces of the usual stuff to get you to "hill-o-death". Ugh, that hill. Love to hate that hill. The downhill switch backs were in the same pace, followed by another uphill to get you back to the pit area. From there we head towards the back of the upper field area. fast down, then an annoying grind back up. The off cambers were much less off camber BUT straight into the wind. Fun. Barriers followed, then around the parking lot back to start/finish area. Ok. this is gonna hurt. A lot.

The Masters 50+/60+ Really Old Man race starts, so I get my number, take a leak and have Harry pin me, cause skinsuit.

At this point, I'm warmed up, but have 30 minutes to kill, I opt for ditching the kneewarmers and just keep the jacket on. Roll around up by the baseball field, chat with @Santapez a bit. I point out the Cycle-Smart dood (James McDevitt) to Harry, cause the crossresults told me he was supposed to win. He is now marked. Roll another half lap before callups, then take a leak in the woods. Race time.

Call-ups by NJBC CX Cup standings. Harry & I are front row, I take 4th spot from the left to set up for the 90 degree right hand turn after the sprint. Harry's to my left, Chris LaBudde to my right.
IMG_6127.JPG

McDevitt (Cycle-Smart guy) is last row. The vibe is chill, everyone talking, trying to figure if we're doing 4 or 5 laps. 1 minute. Garmins start beeping all over. 30 seconds......
GO! Stomp on the pedal, take an extra turn to clip in, but free foot was on from the first strike, so all good. I jostle a little with Chris, and pull out in front as we approach the first turn. I dive right taking the shortest line in, short straight, then turn two onto the finish line stretch in the lead!!! Going hard, but not oh shit hard. I ALWAYS take the far right side as we cross that patch of pavement. #localknowledge There's no bump there at all. We approach the first downhill next to the road, and I can feel a few guys right on my tail. towards the bottom there are a few quick turns that I make easy work of. As I head back up the hill, I can tell there's a little gap behind me. I drill it up, take the left side, up a little high into the corner, and bomb it down tight to the stake. As I go down, up, and back down to pass the barn, there is now a gap. I mean, like a real gap. I pass @StayHydrated 's waffle-palooza area and SCREAM as loud as I can "WWWAAAAAAAAFFFFFLLLLLEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS" as I fly by them. Points for heckling the spectators, or, at least yelling at them. You can hear it on the race video.

I make it thru the lower section clean, hit the Hill-o-death and clear the off camber downhill switchback from hell with no problems. This hill section was where Hannah and my 8ry old son Will are yelling and screaming every lap. #awesome

Not sure if it was first or second lap, but @The Heckler smacked my ass on the way up the hill too. That stung. Back to the race. Basically, I rode everything clean for the next two and a half laps until Harry caught me with one and a half to go. He had gotten tangled up a little at the start, and was in about 15th spot at the bottom of the first hill, and took a little time to work his way up. So I'm leading for the first two and a half laps. This is strange feeling. As I pass the Officials table on lap two, the counter card says "3". Fuck, we're gonna do 5 laps. Not gonna make it!!! Just keep going. It was only after passing the pit again that the official was yelling "Only two more!!!" Huh? Sweet.

Speaking of working his way up, Cycle-Smart was in hot pursuit. He spent some time with Chris in 3rd/4th for a little while, but never got past Harry, I think. So Harry is now leading, and Cycle-Smart is 15 seconds behind me. Harry drops his chain over the barriers and I pass him. I think I stayed in front going into the bell lap. He past me somewhere. I have no idea where. Maybe up the hill? I kept McDevitt in my sights behind me the whole time while trying to stay with Harry. In the end, I was second, 10 seconds back, and McDevitt was 6 seconds behind me. Team Marty's goes 1/2 on the podium for the home race.

What a tough race. Super happy with the result. My best bet for a good finish seems to be get out front and hang on for dear life. I'm enjoying pushing the pace, and making other guys work to catch up.

I was about to say you did that to yourself, then I read the next sentence which leads me to believe your first lap was still that fast.

Great race, I saw Harry drop his chain and had a "OH, SHIT! ATTACK!!!" Moment from about 50 yards away. Solid battle, way to push that pace!

Thanks man. I was unusually sore and achey yesterday. Not sure if it's my arthritis or all the extra work I've been doing on the house. It also could have been those hills.

Marty Report, Cat 5

Race #3 for me and I felt a bit more comfortable going into it. Had a good week of riding and my legs were on the edge of a bit tired, but still ready for some work. I was a bit nervous about my gearing. I was 44x32 and I thought I would be ok on the hill, but ordered a 40 cause I live in fear rather than confidence. Of course that was back ordered and did not arrive in time. So we race with the gears we got.

Got to the race around 7:30ish. Upper lot full, so we grabbed numbers and headed down to the lower lot. Got changed. Pumped up tires. Deflated tires. Pumped up tires. Deflated tires. I finally decided to roll at 28 for a couple pre laps and see how it felt. Pre ride a few laps and realized the course was going to be a slog fest. The hill was tough, but rode it. The longer inclines/false flats were the leg screamers for me.

I got second row, left side. Now I just needed to start better than my other 2 races. Whistle. Clip in. Dude in front of me misses. I get bogged down for a second and move around and lose more positions than I would have liked, but still slight improvement. I probably lost more spots on the finishing straight than I did on the start. I really just need to do a better job of fighting or holding my position in the first 1/4 of a lap. First lap was fairly routine. Crowded corners and such. The only place I made a stupid mistake was the off camber righty. I passed a couple people on the way to it and went into the corner a bit too hot so I went wide and lost my back wheel a bit. Threw a foot down and stayed semi upright.

I tried to make up the positions that I lost and gradually did. I just tried to mark guys ahead. In my running days I was always told to pass with strength. I always try to do that but feel so weak when I pass someone and I know they can hear me breathing from 100 meters away. I don't remember much else. At some point the laps all just blend together and I am just counting how many times more I have to slog up that hill.

Finished up kind of unsure of where I placed. Rolled up to some friends and was super stoked on their races. Nothing better than seeing someone throw down a really great race. That one was a real lung burner. I finished up 15th. Fairly happy with it. Every raced I have finished a bit closer to the front, but there is still a big gap to the guys at the front of the race.
