Book of Paul H

A short ride today at HM.
I was kinda surprise to see that things were pretty dry there today.

Nothing much to report other than there was a down tree on the unmarked trail going up north between the red and the yellow.

3. Get a better bike! I am going to need more advice on this from the good ppl of MTBNJ. How do you get the CFO's approval on this considering I just got a road bike only a few weeks ago?

Two ways and only two... Ask for permission or Ask for forgiveness. Seems Permission failed... Time for forgiveness - Go get a new bike!

Did a bit of a grand tour of HM this morning... well sort of.
Rode the unmarked trails and the colored trails.

Someone cut up the fallen tree that was blocking the yellow trail up north. Thank you for that!

Pretty clear view of the city from the summit this morning

Someone must not like mtbers because those tree branches were back. There must have been about a dozen blocking the switchbacks coming down from the summit. Ive cleared them... which was no big deal since I walk most of it anyways lol

Another road ride... I set out today to do at least 30 miles. All of a sudden, I hear some hissing coming from the back. Sure enough, a flat but no problem. I have all the stuff I need.
I pulled over and took care of the flat. But.... the only thing on my mind was to get home. Mentally, continuing on was not even an option. Took the shortest route home and only completed 16 miles. Looks like I got traumatized by that incident at Saddle River Park. 🙁

Gotta goto Walmart and buy more tubes....

are you overdressed?
We set out at 5:30 in the morning. It was kinda cold at that time. I think I took off the jacket once we got to Coney Island around 10:30AM.
Compared to @liong71er, I guess I was a wuss cause he took off his jacket in Fort Lee on the ride in.
Maybe I looked goofy in that pic because I was getting hot.... or I am just goofy looking to begin with... lol.

One thing I forgot to mention was that we had the first hot dogs of the day at Nathan's.
We waited about 20 minutes or so and made the first order of the day.

This is the second time riding with @liong71er and wow... what a monster of a rider. He did the trip on his mountain bike and I don't think I've seen him breathing.
I want to take this opportunity to thank @liong71er, my big bro, again for this ride. This is something I will never forget... my first century and I hope there will be many more to come.

BTW... I have never seen so many roadies before until this trip. lol

Wow... it was miserable this morning.
Too cold... too hot.... low energy.... off balance... you name it... I just sucked!
Dropped the bike twice... and the saddle almost violated me again....
Also realized why cycling jackets has no hood. Because of the damn hood on my jacket this morning, I couldn't see the cars coming behind me on the road on my way back home.

One good news tho... my seat post for my road bike came in today. 🙂

Had to make amends with Saddle River since this park system is on my way to Fort Lee and GWB.
So.... decided to ride down there and hit... or at least try to hit all of Saddle River as I possible can.

Set out at 7AM and unlike my ride at HM yesterday, I was properly dressed.... well so I thought until my feet got cold.
Oh well... it was bearable so no real harm done. Wasn't like the Coney Island trip but came out to a respectable (noob's standard) 40miles.

And I think there is a problem with my bb... when pedaling, I can feel and hear very light grinding.... a lubricated grinding... if that makes sense.
Does this mean the bearings have to be greased?

Noobs don't do 40 and 100 mile bike rides. Time to change your thread title.
I am not trying to be humble or anything... but whenever I get on the saddle, I just feel like a noob.
When and if I can ride HM without getting knocked off the saddle, then I will change the title.

Oh, that grinding feeling on the road bike.... dirty chains lol. Gave it a nice thorough clean and lube.
Also changed the brake pads... wow... night and day difference.
See? still a noob! HA!

Time to invest in some of these:

For me they are crucial for the winter and useful for situations where I didn't wear proper feet gear. You can just throw one in your pocket.

Chances are your bottom bracket bearings are sealed (99% of modern bikes). Which means the grease is sealed in there and you can't open them to actually see the bearing balls .. well you can if you try hard enough, but it would be a real pain and not worth it. You just replace the whole bearing "module" once it's time and the cost shouldn't be too much. But BB bearings usually last a very long time. I have not had to replace my BB bearing ever yet and as you found it wasn't the bearings.

I was watching some youtubes on bb maintence and realized that they are sealed. Just wondering if it is worth it for a noob to buy tools for diy or just take it to a LBS when the time comes. I dont thing I would do any bike builds anytime soon in my future but it seems that for any work at a LBS... it takes at least a week.

Ok so since you are in the blog game, I need clarification on your username. If I channel my old Bumper Stumpers mojo all I can get is like "Kate-n" which makes no sense. See ate en? Seeyaten. What's C8N mean?

What's your avatar?

These are important questions.
