Asheville/Pisgah/Brevard

So ummm... yeah.... maybe don't plan a trip to the area right now.

The area just north of the North/South Carolina border has been ordered to evacuate. I think I saw the Table Rock fire is up to almost 9,000 acres (human cause) and DuPont is either all closed or mostly closed right now. I believe they're also kicking people out of Pisgah. Tons of "information" out there but it's a little hard to trudge thru the real stuff and the panic stuff.

And no... We are not in any immediate danger.

Hope it stay that way for you. Sucks to see this area go through another disaster.

unfortunately, not totally unexpected. so much debris from Helene that was just waiting to become kindling under the right circumstances.

With all the weather/fire unfortunate activity down there in the last year or so and expansion/new trail building, would any of the above recs have changed? A bunch of us (5-10) are thinking of making a long weekend trip down to the Brevard/Ashville area for our annual Cinco de Mayo biking trip. Where is the best place to get a large VRBO? what trails are "Cant miss"? For purposes of this post, some of our favorite trails locally are Stephens, Wiss, White Clay, Hartshorne, Chimney Rock and Sterling. Also wouldn't mind a long gravel day.

no... i think for the most part, it's all good to go. a bridge is still out in DuPont... and they recently redid a few spots on Mine Mountain and Burnt Mountain (both DuPont)... Black is looking good in Pisgah (some recent trail work between Middle/Lower) but I think you're good to come on down! And Dolly's (Ice Cream Bar) next to the hub is getting worked on now and we're hoping it opens in time for Memorial Day.

EDIT: also, if there's some other place you're looking at (like Bent Creek or Mills River) I can get better intel for you but I'm pretty sure those are all good to go too.

Nothing's really changed. The fires didn't affect any of the trails in this area. If anything I'd stay away from maybe the Old Fort trails unless you're passing through. They're still hard hit.

Asheville/Brevard area everything is open with the exception of the bridge in Dupont that won't allow an easy all-day "Best of Dupont" ride but all the rides are good at each half of the park.

WNC Bike Fest is this coming Saturday so all the trails in the Brevard area are going to be 100% cleared if anything comes down in the next few days. But they've been ridiculously cleared anyway now that SORBA has full time staff maintaining the trails.

Honestly just pick the "best of" on Trail Forks or Singletracks and work your way down from there.

Pisgah:
Upper/Middle/Lower Black - I suggest going to the intersection of Upper/Middle and climbing Upper until Turkey Pen instead of the hike-a-bike. I suggest adding on the shorter "Lower" or longer "Upper" parts of Sycamore to finish that out.
Butter - Totally revised, lots of people raving about it. @Mare and crew was just down here and it was their favorite.
Bennet - If you want more raw with big drops and tech.

Dupont:
Ridgeline Loop starting from Lake Imaging is the general first time ride.
Cedar Rock/ Big Rock on the other side is generally the go to. They just re-did Mine Mountain, opened last week and it was really really fun.

If you do Black or Sycamore I'd say it's worth parking at The Hub now and taking the pedestrian bridge over and riding up the Ecusta trail. It's great just finishing at The Hub and doing beer/coffee/burgers/etc.

I always tell people to get an AirBnB that's walking distance of the downtown of Brevard. This way you can walk there for food, beers, etc at night. Pisgah will just be a few minutes away, Dupont 15-25 minutes depending on which parking lot.

So I saw this on WNC FB page

I'm assuming a troll post

Why are so many mtbers so unhappy down there lol...

That page is always so volatile

Butter was amazing!! The climb up was not as brutal as Black Mountain to upper with the hike a bike 😂 The hike a bike was hard, but I’m glad I did it so I know what it is. Anyway, the climb up to Butter was not bad and the down kept on going! So worth it.
