All-purpose 29er Tires

I am sure there is a post about this somewhere... BUT I am looking for "all-purpose" tires for riding in South Jersey. I usually ride Camden County, Kresson, Ceres, and occasionally Wissahickon.

It gets a little sandy down here and I am looking for a little more width than the 2.1 tires I am currently using (Michelin Country Race R, 29 x 2.1).

Any suggestions? I think I can fit up to 2.4 inches!

I have Rampages 2.35, run them tubeless w/stans on flow rims with 18 front 24 rear. They do well in sand, mud, hardpack and rock gardens. 7 yrs no flats. Price is decent at around $50. I have another wheel set with 2.1 nanorapters arch rims, these are great for places like 6 mile, there is a world of difference between the two wheel sets.

Thanks for the advice... I never thought of running different tire pressure between the front and the back! (Still a noob)

I had the trail kings on my 26er. Loved them in a 2.2. Cheap too!

For sandy trails get the widest tire you can squeeze into the frame (and sill use all your gears). You're going to want 3-5mm clearance all around because wheels DO flex under side load and what fits in the stand may not fit on the trail....

The tread doesn't have to be super aggressive either... Just a wide footprint. I run 2-4 psi less in front everywhere.

2c.

I use Maxxis Ikons for everything. I have Ardents on one of my bikes, and they're a really nice tire, they aren't Ikons . I ride Wiss at least four days a week most weeks and a pair will usually last me about 6 months, which is pretty good considering what I put them through.

What @greek32 said. Ardent 2.4s ...nice and wide, not overly aggressive tread but will get you through sand just fine, light enough. Rampages are good too. I have both, but I think the ardents would work a bit better.

Love my ardent 2.4 exo...and u can run at very low psi....prob around 9-13 in sand. I run 13-14 on my rigid on hardpack and way 200.with xr2s i ran 23 psi!

Mountain kings are great for Sandy stuff, you can get a set from competative cyclists for under 40$, or you can come to the jungle jam on the 11th and I'll sell you my brand new never used set of the mountain king 2.4's for couple of hotdogs and a beer 🙂 keep in mind when people talk about sub 24lbs pressures, it's strictly for a tubeless set up, you run those pressures with a tube you will most likely catch a pinch flat and possibly destroy your rim on the first bigger root or rock. I'm close to 200#, my bikes are set up tubeless and anything under 22lbs pressure in the rear I feel my rim hitting, front you can run less. When you enter the lower pressures always make sure you have some tire levers, pump, patches and spare tube in your pack.

Thanks for the info guys. I float around 260-280 lbs and I am hesitant to go tubeless and run such low pressure.

@skyrokz I will pm you as the 11th approaches and we can look into a trade! What kind of beer do you like? 🙂

Saguaros would be great for those parks. Fast rolling, big volume and ridiculously tough. If your a Clyde these tires are up for the test. When I was heavier (210lbs) I set them up at 18psi (fr./back). They were very predictable for me. I did notice on the loose stuff at Chimney Rock I had to put some body into it for some hook up.

Whatever they are selling, I'll be drinking 🙂

I'm not the only one who likes the Seguaro? Also like the Maxxis Ignitor. I have Ardents non-exo on my FS and really like them. My HT has a front Seguaro and a WTB Trail Boss on the rear and that setup has served me well in the Allaire sand.

I had an Igniter on the rear with a Rampage up front, destroyed it in 3 months, tore off knobs and the side wall threads chewed up from rocks. Replaced it with a used rampage, all good.
