A good lube?

The Dancing Machine
During a mid week ride I experienced some gears shifting issues and brought it to Marty’s in Randolph for a look. Too difficult to shift or get the peddle stroke right I said. As they were closing I asked them to look at it in the morning and tell me what might be wrong.

The next day I didn’t hear from them so expected the worse and at the end of my shift and prior to driving home I called the shop. The very nice young lady that answered the phone looked up my bike as I was prepared for some bad news… she said, “you just needed to lube your chain more”. This was a surprise to me as I just purchased the muc off dry lube that I applied the prior weekend after degreasing and cleaning my bike….

I guess it pays to know when to apply and how long to keep in on for.

During today’s ride in Stephen’s all I kept thinking of when going through the creeks and puddles was whether or not I should have used the wet or dry lube.

So, what do you think? Is a wet lube meant for those Oregon days of damp and rain while dry lube is for sun and dust only? What about those damn puddles and creeks?

After I got home from today’s ride I cleaned the bike with some all cleaner muc off and then reapplied some dry lube watching it take off some residue… then cleaned it up with a rag.

Ultimately I’m wondering what are your best techniques? What preference on brand, steps to clean, etc…

I did a search online for the best way to lube and didn’t get the results I was looking for so asking the biking community here for some real biking advise.

Thanks and Happy Riding.

i use a wet lube all the time, and i do the drop on each roller method of application, saves mess on the plates (which dont really need lube anyway) and avoids some of the gunk pickup, my chains run fairly clean and quiet. Relube as needed. P.S. remove all that assembly lube that comes on a new chain, all it does is attract dirt which grinds the shit out of your chain shortening its life

i tried the dry lube on my road bike and didnt like it at all, left the chain feeling tacky IMO and left alot of residue on the jockey wheels which just got in the way.

I use finish line ceramic wet on all of my bikes these days but everyone will have their own favorite lube, find one you like and stick with it.

I have been using dumonde "d tech" ..and I really like it. I apply it similarly as mentioned above...clean and dry chain , then apply one drop to each roller , wipe off the excess. ...as long as chain stays quiet on a ride ....I don't worry and I will just wipe off the chain after a ride . If I notice it making a little noise during a ride , I will clean it down a apply fresh lube . That is usually about ever 8- 10 rides or so

Also. Apply after a ride, not right before. Applying and then riding increases the amount of junk the lube picks up

X2 this. Been using for 10 years. Also highly recommend BoeShield T9 (?)

I love”ballistol” I use it on my motorcycle/ firearms you name it!! I’m surprise most people don’t know of it or use it it’s excellent.

I found Ballistol to be like pepper spray - in aerosol form it gets everywhere (Not good for human airways). For certain parts I have sprayed it into a semi-sealed container (through a little hole with the red straw) then immediately seal the container!

BIke chains ? Now a big fan of T9.

I’m surprised I didn’t have any problems but it does smell funky

T9, it isn’t durable if you ride in the wet but the anti-corrosion properties are second to none.
