2024 Lawn yard thread

Not that much longer...

Gas leaf blower NJ Leg bill

"1. a. Beginning one year after the effective date of this section, no person shall sell, offer for sale, or distribute within the State a gas-powered leaf blower for use or operation in the State.

b. Beginning four years after the effective date of this section, no person shall use or operate a gas-powered leaf blower in the State."

Four years from effective date is too long to wait.

EDIT: More recent news (08-07-2024). https://nj1015.com/njs-gas-powered-leaf-blower-ban-what-you-need-to-know/

Hasn't passed yet afaik. And from what I've seen its not looking good for it passing. But then iv been surprised before (and I think it's stupid to ban them they serve a purpose and there isn't a real replacement available. If the electrics were as good market forces would drive gas powered machines into extinction)

I wonder how many people that want this passed hire lawn services that use gas equipment ... And then get pissy when their neighbor does their own leaves on the weekend

Yeah, it'll prolly never make it out of budget.

I will buy one in PA and use illegally... Ridiculous View attachment 250196
You'd be surprised what a powerful mower with mulching kit can do.

I have 4 huge trees on my small property and can chop all these leaves up with my mower. It's really easy right now with it being so dry.

I have not fertilized my lawn in 2 yrs, yet it's as green as all the neighbors with their high maintenance lawn service. Mulch your grass clippings and leaves, this provides N as well as other nutrients for your lawn.

Raise your mowing height to the max. Don't be so anal about the lawn, it doesn't need to look like the neighbors sterile property.

This is not aimed at you in particular. IMO most do what everyone on the block does, which is just an over produced maintenance nightmare.

I usually mulch all of my leaves, way easier. But this year I hadn’t touched them until today and now my mower can’t handle it in the rear 😏

Gotta bag them now, but I ran out of daylight/motivation this afternoon.

you’ll be down to bare grass even with that amount of leaves. Yeah there’s gonna be some visible leaf material, but you’ll never be down to zero no matter what. Come spring time you’ll never know it was mulched vs removed.

One caveat with the leaf mulching is you need some grass underneath to hold the leaves there while the lawnmower does its thing. If you have bare spots or really thin grass it doesn’t work so well.

Half of the normal stuff people do with lawns actively harm them, it is what it is. Bagging clippings is another one that harms the lawn and adds extra work.
The OCD neighbor will cut first bagging the clippings, blow the clippings off the patio down the gravel driveway and sidewalks into the street, then string trimmer trim and edge the gravel driveway tossing pebbles and rocks everywhere, then blow again. Only this blowing cycle, the clippings that didn't make it into the bag are blown off the lawn and also into the street where he makes a huge dust cloud making a pile that goes into the vegetative waste bucket. So much extra b.s. work and noise.

i think someone needs a hobby.

The leaves will break down over time and get eaten by the lawn. The problem is a lot of people don't want to see any leaf material on their lawn.
I like to mulch mine in too, depending on timing. That said, I don't have near as many as in @Cole 's photo. Looks like he'd have to keep on top of it to mulch them in. Still much better than hours with a blower.

Doesn't look that bad for being thirsty. And back to the leaf discussion above. I was reminded today that I have two very " regular" dogs so adding that to the mix would not be great if I didn't blow them...1000001606.jpg1000001605.jpg

I absolutely hate those leaf blowers. My one neighbor has 5 acres and hired landscapers that come every week and I swear those damn things run for hours at a time. It's infuriating, especially during fall cleanup season, it's a solid two days of last blowers. I have ten maple trees lining the side of my driveway, all gets mulched in. Backyard backs up too heavily wooded area, all the leaves get mulched up easily. After mowing, weed whacking, whatever, I have a Milwaukee blower that does just fine tidying everything up, and it's far from the blowyest electric blower on the market.
