Incredibly profound yet fantastically flawed
Fools gold is an awesome course. If you squeeze it in, I highly recommend it. I'd guess 75-80% fun single track! Nothing brutal other than the first climb of the day and of course the sheer volume of trail. Pretty fast course though. Kinda reminds me of Wiss.
Not that you asked, but
I believe that whiteface race is mostly gravel roads.
How do you do at altitude? I'm horrible. My power drops by about 25%.
Yeah, from what I hear the Whiteface course is actually very similar to Iron Cross. I've ridden altitude a few times without major issues -- in Santa Fe I started in town at around 7000 feet and rode up to the top of the ski mountain at about 12K. I was okay for that ride, but it was slow going and I was very tired when I got back to the place I was staying. I rode it again a few days later and felt a lot better. I'd be going out to Leadville a week early to acclimate, so hopefully that would make it manageable. Right now I'm just hoping I get the chance to find out!
