This Thread Blows - C19 and beyond

I was not trying to infer a 30% C19 death undercount, but show me where I said that, because I could have unknowingly inferred that.

I was saying that this VCU/Yale PhD authored paper is consistent with the CDC post #4,500 by @mfennell above. My takeaway was that the huge excesses in NYC cardiac and diabetes deaths may have been actually caused by C19. Or, as the linked article said: "This data, (Dr. Steven) Woolf said, suggests the COVID-19 death counts reported to the public underestimate the true death toll of the pandemic in the U.S. "

I looked back, I thought you said all excess deaths not attributed to covid were actually covid, but you said "a portion". That is probably true, but no one will know if that "portion" is 1% or 30%.

Hey you are slipping, only post these breathless new records, then crickets on lower days! And since deaths are all that really matter, today 67 more deaths. FYI yesterday - FL 49 deaths, NJ 41 deaths.

Thoughts on masks:

It's weird how mask wearing constantly changes due to the situation I'm in.

-My office with 30 people, nobody wearing masks, lots of close contact.
-Job sites. Most jobs nobody wears a mask. Often people will shake hands. Most of the time there's a comfortable distance kept but no masks.
-Food shopping. Everyone has masks, no safe distances, which is hard with lots of people in a confined area.
-Walking around center of Morristown. Tons of people out, outdoor eating on the sidewalks, mostly nobody with masks. Generally when walking people keep a safe distance, but hardly any masks.
-Walking side streets, some masks but mostly nobody with masks. Everyone tends to keep a safe distance. Walking on grass/street while the oncoming person is on the sidewalk. I did have a woman without mask got pissed off at me when I crossed the street, got onto HER sidewalk and was walking towards her. Intended to do the "dance" of keeping as much distance from her as possible but she got pissy and jumped into the street and said something loudly.

My personal view is if you're walking towards me on the street and you're wearing a mask, I'm respecting you and giving you a wide berth, I'll hop into the street, onto the grass, etc.
Walk towards me and not wearing a mask? You're letting me know you're not concerned. I'll still give you a lot of room out of respect, but I'm not walking into traffic.

I just can't believe someone got mad at me for using the same sidewalk as her, outside in the hot summer sun.

I always act as if I could be infected and asymptomatic, but that doesn't mean I need to live in a bubble.

I agree Kev. I just made 10 bucks from a friend. I bet him that if I said something that could be perceived as negative to Rick that GS would chime in and rip me a new butthole. Thanks GS. Like Pavlov's buzzer it happened. ?

Oh, I don't wear a fucking mask in the fucking woods, but when I crossed paths on ST with others this morning, I pulled the fucking fabric over my fucking mouth and fucking nose, because it keeps THEM ( u knew that part, doe?) safer. It also makes them feel better cuz it 's fucking courteous.

I'm not afraid to do either of those fucking things.

Doesn't AARP hand out free masks to its members, what's with the fucking shirt over your face bro? That's so bush league. If you're going to be chicken shit, go full chicken shit with an actual mask.

As I said in post #4,596 above, I wear a tube of fabric around my neck when I ride. So, no shirt.

I love people who call me chicken shit on the internet, doe. ?

Those first two ... do not strike me as good ideas. I know I'm a broken record on this but find me a big bank or tech firm that has their people coming into the office and working in close quarters. What does your company know that they don't? Wells Fargo was going to move forward with up to 20% of their trading floor going in. They just pulled back.

My local Whole Foods limits customers in the store so it's not crowded. The Stop and Shop, more crowded, but I can use a hand held scanner and put my groceries directly into my bags, which is awesome. I'm not so worried about the supermarket. Infection is exposure over time. Walking past someone (especially one wearing a mask) isn't going to do it.

FWIW, our risk tolerance has settled at "I will ride with my friends and my wife will run with hers". I'm taking the greater risk since so much of my riding is on the road in a line.

@serviceguy I think you may have once mentioned that you are from Italy?
Yes, I may have mentioned that in the past...

@serviceguy Thoughts on the article and the comments?

Here's my problems with that:

"There are undoubtedly some details of the social interactions within Vo' that won't apply elsewhere."
they may seem as small details to somebody not familiar to Italian life style, but those small villages have very different habits and demographics than the rest of the country. Each region has very different life styles which are sometimes extremely different from town to town due to ancient historical reasons.

"But it's also probably a lot closer to "normal" interactions than other cases where we've seen these sorts of detailed surveys of populations done, such as cruise ships."
never been on a cruise but in an Italian town of 3000 chances are that each ad every resident know each other and are friendly with each other. Also the general Italian attitude towards rules and regulations (they written for everybody else but me) can definitely throw a fig wrench into any analysis.

"And, with enough examples like Vo', we can get a clearer picture of what the typical behavior of the virus looks like."
This would have required collecting the data on the other 'examples' at the same time, little too later to do the same study.

looks like nj is entering mask fatigue. Just got back from shoprite - one really old lady (80+) with no mask. at least 6 people of various ages with masks over mouth only.
