Evidence of new tick-borne illness

Yeah... we did after our ride last weekend with the kids, and I sent a team email out earlier this week, cause the parents get the emails, and I'm sure zero kids mentioned anything when they got home that day.

I had a tick crawling on my leg yesterday when I was in my driveway getting ready for a ride. Must have picked him up when I took three steps in my front lawn.

to save money you can buy permethrin at tractor supply in a 10% concentrate (for farm animals). 1.4 oz of the 10% into a 28oz spray bottle of water gets you the equivalent concentration of the stuff they sell for spraying on your clothes (o.5% permethrin). For $20 to buy the concentrate you can make 5 gallons of the stuff.

Life hack: be a farm animal.

This has been my questions too. I was wondering if I could treat my socks and shoes for example, but how harmful are those chemicals once you heat up and start sweating or does it dry into the material forever and resist moisture?

I've been an advocate for Perm on this site for a long time and user of Sawyer product longer.

Sawyer use to have a wash that you would add to your laundry. Since they took that off the market I just empty a few bottles in a container in the spring and dose my hiking clothes. I have three outfits I rotate so I know what has been treated.

I get in my car and take the Turnpike to work every day at about 80mph. I consider that a bigger health risk, lol. Just my opinion. Continue on.

What do you guys do as the weather warms up? I'm already in short sleeves and shorts. Seems to me that you still have to use DEET on exposed skin, or plan on sweating much more in long sleeves and pants.
I usually always wear long pants treated, and I spray my shoes and socks.
I only worry about my lower parts since ticks just latch on to your lower parts. They don't drop from trees.
My spray says it's good through a few washing's too.

Alright, all you "I rarely ever get a tick" people are pissing me off.

I grew up screwing around in the woods and I'd be hard pressed to recall a day in my youth when I DIDN'T have a tick on me.

They still get me and the dogs in the back yard now, even tho the dogs love chasing the deer away 😱
Little bastards have radar for me. Its just a miracle I don't have all these tick diseases. I did develop a habit of always looking for them on me tho, so the majority I find are crawlers.

I guess it's time to get rid of that leaf pile...we already poisoned the dogs with some chemical this year for ticks.

3.5 hrs in the woods the last 2 days - zero ticks. Tho today I did find a hunk of dogshit on my calf while checking for ticks - thanks inconsiderate dog owner.

I had Lyme several years ago from a tick I picked up in the woods. That's no fun at all, believe me. This year the dog has had probably 12 of them in the past two months and she never goes near the woods. Stay vigilant, stay protected.

It is also important how you treat clothing when you get home after being exposed. First brush off your legs, clothing and shoes with a hair or dog brush before going inside. Ticks survive the washer, so if the clothing is not real dirty, consider putting them in the dryer for a short duration at high temp. You want to cook the ticks and get them to fall off, without ruining your elastics. Clean the lint trap afterwards. Now put the cloths in the washer or reuse.

I have read that CO2 is a not insignificant marker for ticks (and other insects, one being mosquitos) to find potential hosts.

My father's second/ex-wife did her biology master's thesis on ticks and they used dry ice to attract them for studying.

While mtn bikers love to make fun of me for it, I saw a significant decrease in the number of ticks I would pick up during rides when I started shaving my legs. Hard for ticks to grab onto leg hair when there isn't any.

Finally ...you found a legitimate excuse!

All kidding aside, it's a bad tick season. I picked up two this week at Wayway and one a few weeks back at Blauvelt. My son had one crawling on his ear the other day. That's more ticks than I saw all last year. Check yourself often and wear repellent EVERY time you go out on the trails. I had a very bad case of Lyme a few years back. It started to destroy my body. Joint pain, memory loss, numb fingers, heart palpitations - I was in bad shape. And most people (like me) never know they've been bit. Just because you've never seen one on your body doesn't mean sh!t.

Just got diagnosed with with Lyme disease. I have been riding a lot at Mercer and Allaire. Even with DEET I still find those lil buggers on me. I think I am a magnet. Also for those who say you can't get it twice, it ain't chicken pox. This is #3 for me.
