Checking Luggage: Adventures in Time Bending 9178

@davidcarson48, glare does effect plasmas more, but I'd argue if you aren't setting up on a room where you can control the lighting conditions you can't be having a discussion about achieving the best picture quality and viewing experience.

Plain ol' 4-inch matching backsplash is the plan.

Betamax was before my time. Was Betamax marketed as a premium product to VHS and sold at a higher price point? Sony has a history of that. If so not really apples to apples to Plasma's death. Who else had a mini disc player? Major points if you owned a laserdisc player at some point.

I believe betamax was marketed as premium product.

I had a mini disc player but I didn't use it much because I've never really been a walkman guy, other than when I was actually listening to cassettes going to high school on the bus.

I remember in college we actually rented a laser disc player and watched some messed up Japanese movies.

At church we have a 52" plasma. It's heavy as sh*t. Need 4 people to move it around safely.

You're right the owner should replace those cabinets before the countertop.

On the job security topic- I faced this last spring.
The writing was on the wall for the institution, my department and definitely some colleagues.
When the rumblings started to get official, I had a talk with my boss to let him know I was going to start looking.
He assured me I should not be concerned, but I told him it was time for me to go.

I recently thought about letting my bosses know as well, but unless you're 100% you're jumping ship, you may be painting yourself into a corner. Guess there's two reasons to let them know, (1) you really respect and like them or (2) hoping to get let go.

Yup, Sony backed it as a premium product, vs JVC's VHS marketed for longer recording times and more affordable.
Guess who won?

Good job on the counter work. It's good to be involved in the DIY to know what's going on with the parts you usually don't see.
But when we did ours, I did plumbing and sink, but installers took out the old one.

actually still have a laserdisc in the basement, it's got one of those fancy KTV scoring systems from Pioneer
definitively retro and fun nostalgia from college days go by.

Betamax was a direct competitor to VHS, and like other failures like the minidisc, a camcorder format, and computer drive?
their first real format win was the blu-ray. Beta was better in just about everyway, but with licensing issues and movie distribution alliances, Beta had no chance.

It was a respect/like thing. They had always done right by me. That, and I knew they wouldn't kick me to the curb. And i knew i had to go.

As it is, I still collaborate with my old team. Don't burn your bridges kids!

And great thread you started on career change. Did not post my story there because mine wasn't a 180.

good point by @soundz about the weight
China by far dominates the LED market, from my understanding its considerably easier to manufacture than plasmas and lower shipping weights good consumer selling point

Question of the day: Is high-end audio/video taking it in the junk because of smart phones? My audio setup in high school was light years better than it is now, which many days is me leaving my iPhone on the counter playing Spotify.

you have it spot on, no one cares about quality anymore, it's all about convenience
I have a no music from phones, ipads or mp3 rule at my home, the low grade tinny sounds are unbearable
Also bad head phones is killing the music, quality is not about the extra decibels. Whatever happened to layers and separation?

@ChrisRU, what's your AV system? mine is rather dated, and could you an upgrade, but with constant changes, I'm reductant

Funny. My original thought to post was i still value quality equipment though it's pumping lossy sources.

I'm running a 2011 Panasonic plasma, ~2009ish higher end Onkyo receiver, Paradigm Atom surrounds with a timbre matched Paradigm center channel and a Paradigm 12" sub. Its all been pieced together over time and none of it is over the top, but it works great and sounds awesome in my space. All of the speakers are ~20 years old now, I got them second hand in excellent condition. I also grabbed the Onkyo receiver recently to replace an old Denon receiver I was using.

You can never stay ahead of the changes, but there are few standard changes that you can't workaround. The only one on the horizon that would be of any concern is UHD/4K, but that's still being figured out and is at a minimum a few years a way from seeing any type of reasonable adoption. Dolby Atmos might be another one but I haven't been paying to much attention to it.

You can run the same 5.1 speakers that were available in the mid 90's. Some of the surround codecs have changed, but that's handled by the receiver. Moving to 7.1 interests me but the reality is there aren't a ton of movies out there that utilize it. I was able to move from standard def to HD using my older non-HDMI receiver by running the video over HDMI directly into my display and sending the audio signals via Coax or optical into the receiver. You're then switching signals at two different points (TV and Receiver) but a good, programmable universal remote that will do this for you with one button is the best piece of gear you can buy. You would be able to do the same in the future if you ended up with a reciever that couldn't hand 4k video pass through. Point is, there are ways to work around/adapt to new tech as it comes out, you don't have to do a wholesale change over.

The initial iterations of Plasma's really doomed them and gave consumers bad perceptions. They weighed a ton, had loud cooling fans, and had IR and burn in issues. Pioneer got them right around 2009 and Panasonic perfected them with their 2012 line-up. Then they were killed off.

So in other updates, I need to put the kitchen sink back in tonight, it really sucks not having a sink. The new countertops are 5-15 days out, the exact install date isn't scheduled yet. Our place is a mess though with all of our kitchen stuff piled in the dining room. I know home improvements are never fun, but I think they are even less so when you are in a smaller space like a condo.

I had to run to New Brunfus after work yesterday to swing by the courthouse and sign some paperwork. In one of the new hats I'm wearing, I'm taking on co-guardianship of my younger sister who has Cerebral Palsy as the first step in longer term transition plan for her care. Since we were in the old 'hood we checked out some of the campus (lots of changes and construction) and had a nice dinner downtown. Busy rest of the week and weekend lined up.

I remember living without the kitchen sink for 2 weeks... washing dishes in the bathtub was not fun. BUT it's completely worth it because it will be over soon, and you will never have to do that again. Better now than when the baby is here!

Had the same issue recently, my NAD T765 developed a HDMI board issue and I swapped in an old Pioneer Elite but had to buy a HDMI converter to hook up the Blu-Ray and cable. Trying to update the software to see if it helps. The newer NADs are unique that it allows swappable I/O boards, but they are expensive. I think an updated board is around 700, definitely reluctant on sinking more on AV.

We've had quite an extended discussion on A/V stuff, time to right the ship after one more diversion. I didn't get to Interstellar last week, finally watched it last night. While it still looks and sounds great, I was disappointed to find a didn't enjoy it as much the second time around. The first go around it holds you through 3 hours relying on a plot driven by suspense. I remember the heart pounding a bit in the theater. The reality is very few movies can generate that more than once.

I'm skipping out on work tomorrow to help get things together for the baby shower Saturday. Its not a surprise which is nice, once less thing for me to worry about. The in-laws are hosting, so tomorrow will be some spring clean-up and setup. The rest of the weekend will be figuring out what to do with the life altering amount of baby stuff I'll have to find a home for. Good timing with the kitchen being blown apart atm too. I put the sink back in last night, so at least we have that.

I pulled this Builder's bar out of my desk today. The expiration date on it is 2/7/14. Do I eat it?

It really will be mind blowing....My entire dinging room was completely filled to the brim after the party...Looking back on it now its funny thinking of the things that were useless and the other things that I would fight someone to the death for. Rocking chair...I would rather have no power in my house than have my rocking chair break.

I used to by cases of bars on ebay years ago for next to nothing because they were expired, im still alive, so go for it.

Catching up on this thread, good read. Started skimming the end due to my waning lunch break. Time management!

I feel busy now but I know I'm really not because we don't have kids yet. I always wonder how it's going to feel when that day comes. Will fine out at some point! And I'm interested to read it from your perspective as it's happening.

@Norm great D&D puke story, had me laughing out loud at my desk. I do think it's different when it's from one of "your" people vs. someone you see as dirty from the office. Whenever I have to touch someone else's mouse I always wash my hand on the wya back to my desk.

@The Heckler yes the farts are always funny. Even more so because I work in a stuffy engineer's office and everyone walks around here 100% business. If I were to laugh or make a joke I'm not sure it would get a reaction, and if there was a reaction it would likely land me in some sort of trouble. Ahh well, I just tell all of the day's dick jokes to myself on the car ride home. Well, not really but I might start tonight. Could be a good stress reliever.

On the job stuff, the points raised just make gears turn in my head. I have no real answers, just questions. I'm not happy, but comfortable. Will upturning the apple cart find happiness? Or just make it different for a while?

And we are back! Last week was a planned hiatus. I was attending some conferences and it was a good time to break for pre-race preparation and to allow the hype machine to run its course.

So the race. We've been getting a bunch of good feedback which is awesome to hear. It takes a lot of work to put on a bad race, it takes even more work to put on a good one. We have a really good crew, everyone takes on different responsibilities and it somehow all comes together. I took on wrangling the reg data and producing the results for this one. For this one we tried something new, keeping results separate from the timing. It worked out well, @Dominique and @davidcarson48 killed it at the top of the hill, which makes my job easier. We had to try a few new tricks for this one, since we have never scored a race this complex. Everything ended up going smoothly. I didn't get the chance to meet any new folks, but if you were there I was the guy with the results sheets and the staple gun.

Also, big shout out to the wife for her help. She is super supportive and is a key cog in making this work. If you visited the day-of reg table, you met her.

Behind the scenes this is how Friday/Saturday before the race goes:

600 numbers for 32 categories.

Updates. The baby shower last weekend was awesome. People are too generous and our kid is well on its way to being spoiled already. I spent most of last Sunday finding a home for all stuff we hauled in Saturday. Still waiting on the counter tops, but we've locked in an install date. I can make at least one whole post about that experience. I didn't eat the expired builder's bar, but I did have make some eggs that were passed their use by date last night. Which reminds me, I also ate an ~7 hour old egg sandwich after the race. It was about as you would expect an old and cold egg sandwich to be. I rode bikes last week, at the Thursday night pre-ride that had no pictures, so there is no proof that it actually happened.

Thursday day after work we are driving to Chicago for a wedding. Road trip!

I have no idea what we would do without you...I mean any of us can put up arrows and tape...I would last about 6 minutes before I went on a rampage if I had to do your job. Me and Pearl...man, picture that shit...we should do it and make a TV show for the fun of it. How long until Utah throws the laptop at pearls head.
