BIYF Winter 2015 Smack Down

Any extra points if you continue to ride with a technical issue? Like a broken shifter cable? or complete a ride with a proven dependency on duct tape? ;-)

might be more rare to get through a ride without a problem 🙂

welcome to the competition!!! gave you two points, 1 for riding today, and 1 for the park - so that park can't be scored again until next week....

hit it!!!

It has come to this....

Yup. Rockin' a ShitiBike.

My office moved recently, and I've been exploring different commuting options.
Today was the CitiBike experiment.
First thing you notice when you pull one of these babies out of the docking station is how full of gravity they are.
I looked it up: 45lbs. Holy shit.
It's like a cast iron stove on two wheels.

Then shortly you'll notice how bad the brakes are. Take the worst brakes you've ever had, coat them in bacon grease, and that's about what you have.
This is an awesome combination with the weight thing.
Add a full head of steam going down broadway, and some jaywalker is gonna get killed.

Then somewhere along the way, you'll figure out that you are going to run out of gear on this beast.
So there's the CitiBike experience for you.

Other than that, it looks like it may be a winner for my commute.
I figure I can shave 40-50 minutes off my roundtrip commute from port authority skipping the subway/walk, and can get a discounted annual membership for about the cost of 3 weeks of subway rides.
Winning.
Well in some ways anyway. Except in the self-respect dept.

So with 3 expeditions on these beasts, I cobbled together 45 minutes of ride time.
I'll call this ride + road- 2pts.

Did the "get creative" thing today to grab road miles since I have no plans at all to throw a leg over my road bike this week.

I left Manyunk and had a little road spin to belmont, did 50 mins there and hit the road again back to Lincoln side trails, then hit the road to cresheim via wissahickon avenue/allens lane. I was hoping two loops would make 45 mins, but I wound up doing a bit more. It was a nice treat since I usually dont make it over to cresh during the week.

Every time I passed this buck in cresh he cared less and less that I was there. The 3rd and last time I saw him he barely got off the trail:

Got back on the road from cresh and spun back to Manyunk. Fortunately mostly downhill on Allens and Wiss Ave due to darkness and rush hour. Another fun day on the bike.

ride, 2 parks and road = 4.

Today started out with a bagel + lox at the local bagel store. Then to whale's house for a roadie ride. He took this awesome picture of me and my great form climbing Garrett Mountain. It's just like Alberto Contador. So far there are 19 like on Instagram.

Then we passed by some Peking ducks.

Then we passed by my childhood house.

After the ride, I ate a coffee and did some work at the whale's local coffee shop that is new (no photo). There was a girl studying, but I didn't talk to her. Whale joined me a bit later and I told him to dunk his croissant in his latte, but he wouldn't believe me. Many conversations were exchanged talking sh*t about mtbNJ people. All conversations was positive of course.

Then I headed down to pick up the Lake boots Pearl was giving away since no one picked it up I figured I would give it a try. Before I picked them up, I ate another coffee at Pearl's local coffee hole. I took a picture of this lady reading her book.

I asked Pearl if there was a park nearby where I can ride my road bike for 45min. He pointed me to Duke Island. It was meh but the single track on a roadie in the dark made things mildly interesting.

When I got home, I threw the boots in the washing machine

Good score on the boots and 2 coffees. I would have killed someone yesterday for a coffee.

AndyJ's beard on Strava profile is quite impressive.

Agreed. Heckler be jealous.

Sorry I can't use jelly in any context other than with things like peanut butter & toast.
Thanks 🙂 It's 6 years in the making. Haven't had much use for my balaclava in a long time 🙂

1/14 - 56m 11s ride, of which 45+ minutes was on the Henry Hudson Trail. Meh. Move along, nothing to see here.

+1 ride
+1 new park
Total: 2

1/15 - Got a stupid idea to ride over to Sandy Hook after work to get a point there. I refuse to drive to anything within about 10 miles, so that would add a lot of extra time to the ride, even though I only needed to spend 45 minutes at Sandy Hook. And, since I already got a point for the Henry Hudson Trail, that portion of the ride wouldn't count. Anyway, I headed out, and uneventfully made it over to the Atlantic Highlands section of the Henry Hudson Trail. But, once I hit the dirt portion, it turned into an icefest. There was some thick ice that had started to melt during that day, but hadn't refrozen yet, so the surface was really slippery. I slowly started across, thinking "I can make it, I can make it, I can make.... SLAM!". Down on my ass. I landed up walking most of the rest of the section, and even that was difficult. The trail has a little bit of a slant to it, so as I was walking, my bike would start sliding away from me, pulling me with it. After I made it through there, I took the roads over to the Sea Bright bridge and put in my time at Sandy Hook. On the way back, I bypassed the icy section of trail on roads, and by the time I met back up with the trail, I already had 35 minutes of road time. So, I figured might as well just ride the roads a little longer for the road point. So, for today, it's...

+1 ride
+1 new park (Sandy Hook)
+1 road
... already have Henry Hudson Trail point
... already have dark point
Total: 3

Day 4 update -

Managed a citibike and buck picture in the same day!

it was moving day, with RyderX launching into the lead with a 5 hour 5 park epic ride. Fantastic. no doubt there is a climbing epic coming out of beautiful andover, nj before the week is up.. going to be tough to beat this time.

Soundz covered most of the state today - getting in a ride with D$, then swinging by my local rain-ride, flat-as-a-pancake duke island.

Picked up a few new competitors! welcome.

the group closed the gap significantly on last week's count. keep going!

Rule reminder - you can get 1 of each rain, cold, dark point per week, but they must be on different rides.....i'll do the max, so just check what is appropriate.

i know Sandy has one more to post - i peeked!

nice work.

AndyJ - i was sure that was a duck dynasty dude......wow.

Utah asks for a dark point like every day. Even when he rides inside at noon.

RyderX playing hardball I see. Big job on that one.
