I'm wondering why everybody "rides" . Clearly some love to do the race thing . Others just like to ride .
What do you get out of it ?
I'll go first .
I didn't own a Mtn Bike 5 years ago . Swore I wouldn't like it etc..... Last year I rode from May to October about 3-4 times a week at Mahlon . I'm kind of a one trick pony when it comes to where I ride . It's close and easy to get to . My buddy works from home ,so we can play it by ear and be wheels down pretty quickly .
We ride socially , not for speed or time , but to get out and get away .
The ride for me does a few things . For starters it clears my mind of all the shit that's going on. Be it work ,wife ,kids etc..... If I'm not focused when I ride , I'm gonna get hurt . It's safe to say that I don't think about any of that stuff once we're moving .
I love the physical challenge, be it to ride hills or clear the techy rock features . Without sounding silly , it's very manly . It might be why I also I like to play ice hockey .
I also use riding as exercise ,it helps me be not as fat as I would be if I didn't ride . I'm 5'10" , 218 today .Last season by mid summer I was at 206 . 200 is my goal for this year . The riding also gets me better focused to eat healthy etc...cause I do love to eat : )
They're is something to be said for being out there mid day on a Monday when it's gonna be in the upper 70's and everyone else is working . It's peaceful yet primal .

tell us , why do you ride .?

All the above plus it makes me feel like a kid again. Innocent wide eyed fun.
Oh, and the andrenalin.

for some reason, ever since i was a kid, i've always liked the woods, trails, etc...just being away from civilization, there's something very right about it to me...😎

Plus, a few years ago, i mangled my hand playing softball. I am not able to do a lot of the other sports i was used to playing like softball, and golf. for some reason i am able to ride with no problems im my hands, so i am very grateful for that...

I love being outside, but hiking or trail-running can get boring after a while. Riding, though, is a whole other animal. It's a great way to see new parts of the state, get healthy, spend time with new and old friends and it can push me to my limits (adrenaline, included).

I've been running for 2 1/2 years and thought I would try something less "impact" as I'm over 40 and want to stay in shape.

I've been involved in a program at work - www.virginhealthmiles.com that allows me to track the amount of steps and get rewarded. (I am not promoting the site in any way).

Since I joined 2 1/2 years ago, I've been more active, lost weight and in total better health. Also thanks to a friend that pulled me in, and once I hit my first trail, there was no turning back.....

Because it's fun. What other activity will allow me to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on equipment alone (not to mention maintenance, clothing, trips, transport gear, etc.) just so I can beat the crap out of my body, risk multiple levels and types of injury, end up dirty and stinky, and can still smile about it afterwards? And after I clean myself up and refuel, I can't wait to do it again.

This is one sport that you can do by yourself and be with a group. It is so much fun, it doesn' feel like "exercise". Don't get me wrong, I'm beat at the end of a ride, but I am usually grinning from ear to ear.

I also ride with a great crew and the social aspect is very cool, too. Overall, great sport!

+1 to what everbody said... plus (barring substantial injury) I can do this into my old and wrinkly years...

I dont have to pay any entrance and or membership fee to have fun, I can meet new friends and enjoy the nature. 🙂

Entrance fee = bike purchase
Membership fee = spare parts

Its all in the logisitics part of the life cycle. 🙂

because of the large amounts of food i can eat, guilt free.

Like! Like!

Also because I am a nature freak who can't get enough of the outdoors. There are a ton more reasons, but I am feeling quite brain dead right now. I think I need a ride... oh yeah, it helps me clear my head, gets me out of a bad mood, makes me feel happy during and after, introduces me to a lot of cool people, and I have bikes that love to frolic so I have to exercise them often. 🙂
