Music

am i the only one who's happy to have oldies back on 101.1? i like my punk and metal, but grew up listening to that stuff in my moms car and country in my dads truck, and have a soft spot for both...

I love 101.1. My friends and I were just discussing this very topic. I also am starting to love 104.3 and 103.9, I heard a set of Jethro Tull, David Bowie, and then the Doors as I was driving to the beach and it took me to a different place.

I am planning a trip to the local library to find some of these types of CD's to burn on my Pod. The library rules for getting ecclectic music you would never think of buying for your Pod.

If any of you folks were fans of the Misfits, Glen Danzig just released a 2 disc set of all unrealesed songs. Some Samhain, some Misfits, but alot of his own stuff that he and Rick Rubin could never agree on or just felt it wouldnt go with the albums flow.

I just read about this in SPIN, I will definitely check it out!

Van Halen And David Lee Roth Announce North American Tour

Let's see how long before DLR fcucks this thing up 😀

Beginning this September, in what promises to be the most exciting live tour this year, Van Halen will embark on a national concert tour throughout the U.S. and Canada with its original lead singer David Lee Roth for the first time in 22 years.

Opie and Anthony were taking bets on it this morning. They predict crumbled foundation by Cleveland, band members not on speaking terms by Halloween, tour over before it hits the Garden.

Why? WHY??? Eddie Van Halen sounds like he stroked out during a bender, and though I recognize his tremendous contribution to early VH, I have never, ever been able to stand DLR.

I should be burned twice for saying I liked the Sammy Hagar years better...:getsome:

I saw VH a few years ago at the Continental Arena an EVH sucked ass!! He was wasted!!! Couldn't hit a note. I think he's clean now, but he did enough damage 😀, he ruined VH for me. I will not see them live again.

Watched the press conference the other night on VH1. Eddie looks like a little old shriveled man now, and DLR continues to act like a bad Catskills comedian.

However, while I can't really get excited about this reunion, it's hard to overestimate the impact of VH through 1984, particularly the s/t and Fair Warning. Those lps were like a force of nature when they were released, and haven't lost too much in the time since.

The band's legacy would be much more potent if they'd quit when they split with DLR, IMO. The Van Hagar stuff doesn't do a thing for me.

A few days ago, I heard an interview with Chris Cornell wherein he said Soundgarden has no plans to reunite. He said he thought the truly "cool" thing (if "cool" could be defined as such - his words) would be to NOT reunite.

Van Halen should take the Not-Reunite-Route. Let their legacy lie as it may. I think most people will see this as the money-grubbing sham it really is, despite the blind eyes the band members wish to turn towards it.

While I cannot disagree with this, I think they turned sham the day they went with Hagar on vocals. That was like the equivalent of Weird Al taking John Bohnam's place after he died. At this point I figure they might as well continue the circus they've become. I think a fist fight on stage would be the proper end to the band anyway.

Ha! This is another point of music-geek contention for me. Around the time of Badmotorfinger, Soundgarden was just massive. I was a fan since the days of their Sub Pop eps, a sucker for their melange of Zeppelin, Sabbath, and weirdo punk rock. When they moved into more radio-friendly territory I was less enthusiastic, but continued to respect them and thought they stopped before they began to suck.

I'll reserve my thoughts on Audioslave and his solo stuff for another rant.

Norm, really? I am not certain I comprehend the Weird Al/John Bonham analogy. Are you going to compare Wierd Al to the bombast of beaten rhythm and vibe that was John Bonham to the vocals of Hagar? Even Robert Plant said that Bonham was irreplaceable, and by Bonham's own son, no less. DLR was a flamboyant and vivacious front man, but his vocal stylings, while distinctive, did not eclipse the guitar licks and accompanying bass/drum foundations laid out by EVH, AVH, and MA.

Asking Gary Sharone to front VH was more of an insult than hiring Hagar; Sammy at least was able to reach the nascent audience ready to embrace the hard-pop-rock sound of Van Halen. Most of that audience (myself included; I was 9 when MCMLXXXIV was released) remembered but were not quite immersed in...When OU812 was released I was more cogniscent of rock and roll in its contemporary form and began to appreciate the band as an outgrowth of the 60s and 70s rock upon which it was founded. Until "grunge" made itself known in the vernacular of my generation, Van Halen, Metallica, and Guns and Roses, and even Bon Jovi, were the last bastion of 70s era hard rock. I found VH relevant even into the mid-90s. Maybe that makes me a rube or an idiot, or just old compared to kids who thought Sharone was a breath of life into an otherwise dying band.

I am interested to see how this tour really fares and what, if anything, the mainstream media does to suck life out of this fish as it slowly dies.

ChrisG, I think all bands have a point where they peak, really reach a pinnacle of artistic achievement as a group that they could not achieve otherwise. Ultimately that achievement has to stand on its own, and no attempt to replicate it need be undertaken because it has already been done and done well...The first time I heard Soundgarden I was completely taken by the raw and new sound they embraced. I am not certain that Chris, Kim or Hiro could reunite with each other or with other stand-ins to recreate that sound - especially not for an audience already exposed to their aesthetic and looking for replication, not authentic representation, of a place and time that has already passed.

I think that is what it comes down to for me: music, like other forms of art, is a reflection of comtemporaneous events. While it is important to understand the context of the evolution and expression of those occurrences, it is also wise to recognize that those times have passed, and we are obliged to learn from them and carry on. The past cannot be relived for our own nostalgic indulgence.

OOOH! a music thread! I somehow didn't see this before... Anyhoo, I just clicked randomly on about 3 of the pages to see what folks liked and noticed wilco and the decemberists... good looks!

Though I'm a hardcore guy at heart (and the subgenres that followed... love american nightmare, against me, small brown bike, etc), I actually enjoy riding to hip hop more than anything right now. The beats are steadier and slower throughout songs and are great for setting a pace. One song in particular that is absolutely OWNING my riding right now is MF Doom- Saliva (a song produced by RJD2, if any of you are familiar). Also Joell Ortiz- hip hop. If you are somebody into 'indie' hip hop, you already know who MF Doom is, but if not- take a listen. It's definitely nothing like what you've heard on tv or the radio. And if you think that you like rap-esque beats, but not a lot of talk about 'bling', you'll definitely like him.

in conclusion, download MF Doom- Saliva and ride with it. I did a 30 mile ride or so alone yesterday (from stanhope to andover, back through the allamuchy trails and through ITC) with that song as a soundtrack- by the time nightfall hit, i was so in tune with that beat I felt like going until I hit ocean!

And if you want some great non-hip hop songs to ride with,

minus the bear- memphis and 53rd
cave in- come into your own

i very much like the New Spoon CD. Good for 7 hour car rides.

Also listened to: Nada Surf, Radiohead, The new interpol (starts off Strong but looses strength), Wilco, Ryan Adams..

These guys have never made an album that's less than excellent. I'd go so far as to say they've never recorded a bad song.

I've not found them to be the most engaging live experience, though. In spite of how frigging cool Britt Daniel is.
