i was doing that for a LONG time...hence the ye olde 20 miler. one day norm was like "dude, don't you get bored riding the same loop over and over again?". it never occurred to me since i was riding the road to "train" for mtbing. now that i actually road ride, doing that on a daily basis would numb my mind faster than you can say banana.

What you gon’ do with all that junk?

All that junk inside your trunk. I’ma get, get, get, get, you drunk, get you love drunk off my hump.

What would the world be without these literary masters? I know I would be lost without fine lyrics like these to get me through the day and change the mundane work day into something more exciting, even if only slightly more. It does help pass the time as I spent a few min this fine morn searching for a picture of fergie’s humps, but was thrilled to come up with something better:

While some may think I came up short on what I found, I beg to differ as what I found was much more exciting. Camel humps. Almost classic. What the hell would we do without the internet?

In my junk riding life, I was treated to another close to 2 hour ride, which seems like a treat as of late. Mainly due to pinktober events, which have come to an end for the most part. Earlier this month I was in the positions of having an abundant supply of MBU’s but not having the time to really use any of them and as most know, MBU’s expire, so I was looking to cash some in. Really though, just the way the cards fell the past couple of days, I didn’t need to use any MBU’s for any of these rides. Sometimes things just work themselves out, which is much easier than having to barter time to ride or whatever. To add to the excitement of my ride, I road in PA too since I dropped my son at the in-laws. I parked at the park-and-ride next to I-95 in upper makefield and headed towards new hope. I took this picture from the parking lot, just after sunset. It would be a moon lit ride.
picture.php

The moon was bright, not crazy bright, but became bright enough that moon shadows were aplenty and I often mistook the moon light for a car coming from behind a few times. I did my pretty standard route to new hope this way but did it in reverse of what I normal do. It was a stellar night, a big difference from the rain of the morning. Temps around 50’s, no wind, bright moon, it really doesn’t get much better than that for a night ride. I opted for just my bar light, which kind of sucks for going around turns and higher-speed downhills, but I didn’t feel like having the light on the helmet for this ride. I stopped one time to try and take a picture of some moon shadows, but my phone camera just wasn’t having that. I have a really close call on the downhill into new hope where a car coming the other direction almost pulled right in front of me. I skidded a bit but the guy stopped and I was disappointed I didn’t have the helmet light to shine in his face. Helmet lights are good for that. The area around new hope is perfect for that Halloween and fall feel and I got that freaking feeling on one or two roads, but twas in my head. On the way back, I turned off my light for awhile along an open road with no cars and rode by the moonlight. I highly recommend this as it is a cool experience.

About 5 miles from my car, the light on my stella starts flashing, which means the battery is almost dead. Shit! I change my route so I can go along roads in the middle of fields, where the moon light is unobstructed. I rode almost the whole section of Wrightsville road without a light since I know the pavement is smooth there and I only turned it on a few times when cars were coming the other direction. The other rode I choose was a bad choice as the pavement sucked and there were a lot of cars coming towards me, so I have to use the light since damn car light flood everything out. I have to say, night riding in the morning is much more enjoyable because of less cars. I tried riding with the strobe light and within 5 seconds it was driving me mad, so I just left it on the lowest setting. I made it back to my car just fine.

Today
As I was finishing my ride last night, fog was already starting to creep into the low areas, so I expected a foggy ride this morning and god ole MN did not disappoint. Ride with lights and fog is not a great combination, but I had both the bar and helmet on, which helps a little. I decided to take an easier route this morning since my volume has been up the past couple of days. Only thing to note is that I included the Aunt Molly, which was choppy as hell and hopefully will smooth out come winter time. I did focus on maintaining a higher cadence and hit an average in the mid-nineties.
After the ride I stopped home and rode in. The ride in was interesting as I had a few close calls with running stop signs/lights. While I wasn’t close to being hit, I had to divert on to the sidewalk once and onto the wrong side of the road the other. I guess I could just stop, but what is the fun in that?

Junk Time
As norm mentioned, these would be junk miles only if you care. I won’t say I don’t care, because who doesn’t want to get faster? But I don’t care enough that it bothers me that I am stuck. Maybe next year I will see about some kind of structured intervals or something, but there is no way I care to keep to any kind of plan. What it comes down to most is that I am out there riding. It is a constant, doesn’t necessarily matter what I ride, just that I am riding. If I was a racer, it would be different, but since I don’t take the time to get to races and such, it kind of goes hand-in-hand that I wouldn’t really care about training when I don’t have anything to train for. In fear of sounding like a broken record, I will just stop there for now. However, if it is junk miles I ride most of the time, I am head-over-heels love drunk.

my light situation simply sucks and getting out before 7A is just plain dangerous...although VERY fun. yesterday, despite the rain showers, was a blast but there were a few times that i was riding along with just the rear blinky going and on-coming cars would sorta swerve at me. i'm not sure if it's shock to see a (nearly, once again...) 200lb man riding at 6:45 or the shock of any man riding in the dark with nearly no light. either way good times.

i don't know what kind of plan i have moving forward, i just have a general direction for the next three months followed by a less general, more specific direction the following three. as norm mentioned in one of these threads, a six month carrot is way too long. 12 weeks looks to be about optimal but we'll see. i really only have one new goal for next year so we'll see.

haha - i went out at 11pm once during the week to test the new replacement light magicshine sent me and all the deer were just staring at me "what is this crazy mofo doing" (i'm 218lbs btw)

only met 4 cars in the 90min i was out and they all gave me a wiiiide berth prob thinking i was super crazy 😀

I see roughly 200 deer on each of my morning rides. Most of the deer just chill, but there is at least one that always runs across the road or something. Deer are a sketchy bunch.

One thing about riding at night is that you are actually more visible if you have a rear blinky and you will notice more people slowly down and pass with caution compared to riding during the day.

I noticed this the other evening. As I was almost home it started to turn to dusk so I put on the blinky and noticed cars passing me with more caution. Cars respect the blinky.

sometimes...some dude missed running me into a ditch by about three inches in Chester yesterday morning. scared the poo(riggy) outta me. 😀

I don't...well, I don't know if I can let this slide. I mean, aside from it not making sense, I just can't let junk & drunk be interchanged like that. I admit I don't know where you were going with this. At first look I would think that you were trying to say "junk drunk", but that doesn't make sense. Then the italics led me to think that you meant "love junk" but swapped out junk with drunk.

For no good reason I now have this song stuck in my head:

Man the 70's were so f'ing awesome.

It doesnt make sense, it is the lyrics to that stupid song. I actually changed that after initially writing something else.

Sometime your hit, sometimes you miss. Over the years i have been working on perfecting missing 90 percent of the time. I was never good at slecting what will stick.

yeah dude, i had no clue what you were talking about with that. i figured it was some obscure mamma's & pappa's reference.

Some days you have it and some days you don’t

In the wake of the love drunk fallout, my riding today followed suit. I snoozed a bunch this morning and since I had good rides the past of couple days, I thought the extra but of rest would do me good. I was up by 6, but mess around and didn’t get out the door until 6:40. I rode in as I was planning to ride into Princeton at lunch to attend to some business (i.e. returning shit for the wife).
Thought break – I just looked up where to us ‘i.e.’ and found that I actually used it in the correct context. I also found out the meaning of ‘e.g.’, which I have used before, but only because I thought I knew what it ment.
I decided on the fixie today since I knew my cross bike had a glass or thorn in the tire, which I had not removed yet. The ride in was uneventful other than having a slightly close call with a taxi after blowing a stop sign. Again, nothing close, but something to mention as I will hit a car sooner or later.
This morning at work I felt flat and lazy and was totally uninterested in what I was working on. At lunch I rode as expected and the flatness continued. It was likely a combination of not eating much in the morning, the swirling winds and the shogun which weighs a solid probably 10 lbs more than my other road bikes. On the slight hill into Princeton, I was climbing similar to how the love drunk floated yesterday, like a lead weight, probably because I was riding a steel weight. All of these are just excuses, but I still felt like a bag of ass out there today. Light on the bike did not exist for me today. I thought maybe on the ride back I would get a tailwind or something, but it was not to be. It did occur to me on the way back that the bearing on that bike may have gummed up from sitting so long, but I was just looking for things to blame the flatness on. Towards the end of the ride, I started to wonder what nutritional value my jersey would have as I was ravenous.

That’s all I got today. The flatness continues until now. I may drink a soda to get me back up there…..

Some days you feel like a nut...

...some days the bar eats you.

kev, i had the EXACT same thing happen to me yesterday morning. literally. i was maybe the slowest ride i've done in a LONG time. i was completely dead out of the gate...so naturally i did another hilly route. the first one i was dead after 50 yards. dumped into the granny and could barely make it. mind you, this is the same climb that i can do in the big ring, second to last cog on the back. whatever that is.

Little Dick?

Jake was at the gym doing squats the day before. And trying to figure out how to operate his iPhone. You don't even own an iPhone.

You ever get any podcasts working? You never really talk about anything other than riding, your wife's boobs, or the shower at work. So I have no clue what your interests are outside a very limited scope. And frankly, we all assumed the bikes and boobs thing. So all I got is showers. I know nothing about shower-based podcasts.
