The DIY thread - DIYourself

About 7:30am.
Figured that I'd break at least one unit, 😃managed to get them done in an hour. No extra HD trips either.

Both units seem quieter. House is cool. Pretty much running continuously.
I have to do this about 2x a year since my dryer vent blows onto the AC condenser. Not a fun job since the condenser is also under the deck 🫤

I tried the foamy stuff once but I think I’m in a different league dealing with dryer lint. Either way, a good fin comb comes in handy with the amount of time I spend doing this.

this sounds horrible. move the dryer vent?

speaking of which, dryer vent cleaning is on the list now too. it is only about 5' long with 2 - 45s, so hopefully not an issue.

Took the hint from @iman29 - picked-up some condenser coil cleaner from HD and had at it.
Of course I went with the foaming spray bottle, which had a nozzle that shot a stream, so had to dump it into a pump sprayer.
Much better.

Two units for the house - lots of dirt, no rodents. Hope this saves a few $$ cause wow.

The instructions indicate that high pressure spray is a no-no. well the shower setting got limited results.
Set the nozzle on flat, which provided a good velocity spray without a bunch of volume.
Success!

The two cans I bought are still sitting in the garage - good reminder I need to get this done. Maybe this weekend when it finally drops into the 80s again.

For anyone else doing this diy be sure you spray from inside the coils to the outside with the lightest rinse setting on your garden nozzle that let’s you rinse so you don’t bend any fins.

@Red Mosquito that dryer vent issue sounds terrible might be worth considering moving it out from that location one day.

In further attempts to find ways to keep the house cooler I’m Not sure why it took me this long to realize how much heat was coming out of the little portal door to the attic that’s inside the ceiling to my bedroom closet.

The attic space isn’t usable on this side of the house but this little entry door is there to access things like my attic fan which is of course all the way on the other side of the house. I had to deal with that same situation above about 5-6 years ago when the fan quit.

Anyway sealed this off and now my bedroom is definitely cooler without the blasting of furnace air coming in.

And Yea the trim is broken since the last time I was up there it got caught on my belt on the way back down and too lazy to fix it.

Yeah it does suck. The dryer vent is a pretty straight shot so I don’t want to move it and add a bunch of bends and another 6-8 ft of duct.

The plan is to replace the AC and move the unit to somewhere that makes more sense. Just gotta get some other things done first. Its lived that way for 24 years now 😬

Do you have insulation on top of that?

If not, I'd cut a bat of rockwool to the size of that wooden hatch and glue it on. And maybe for extra insulation either put another piece on top that you push out of the way when you infrequently go up there.

I say rockwool because I just bought some to replace missing insulation in my attic a few weeks ago and after using that stuff, fuck using fiberglass ever again.

thanks steve good idea. I hope I dont need to get up in there for anything soon but I will do that if needed.

and yeah the fiberglass insulation is terrible to work with I dont know how the pros deal with it.

this is a good idea for winter time too - up is where the heat wants to go!

This morning, I walk into the room that is cooled by the smaller unit - and it isn't cool.
I mean the room is cool, it just isn't cool - ykwim.

Go outside and the compressor isn't running - ok, I can live with that - probably blew the capacitor.
But I'm going to check the breaker first. Breaker is good to go.

As we all know, hitting it with a thud, palm-of-hand style is the first thing (I did that while outside)
Second is turning it off, then back on. Cycling the power (see what I did there)

#BOOM - back in business.

This does not inspire confidence tho - we will see.

Just thinking right now, but any thoughts about the possibility of making the interior of this cabinet a bit wider? This is an armoire that has a 50" Plasma TV in it that's starting to act up. Most of the new 55" TV's show 48.1" - 48.3" widths. Armoire is 48".

Not sure how feasible it is to use a router to take about 1/8" off each side. I'd also need to grind the hinge back, but that shouldn't be a big deal.IMG_5854.jpeg

insert the new TV at a slight angle so it fits in and then angle the armoire in the opposite direction by the same amount, voila, watch tv straight on (i'm gonna duck now)

I finally convinced my friend to dump the cabinet.
Get a nice credenza - put tv on wall (or on credenza) - add a center speaker or soundbar - cause voice
You will be happy - and love island will never look so good.

If you take that door off on the right, can you cut a piece of wood the depth of your armoir and clamp it to that side in the front and back?

If so, you can clamp that wood horizontal and then just run the router along it and take off 1/8" depth and then keep moving that piece of wood up as you cut out a strip. Larger router so you can do a wide swath at a time, not a trim router. Well, aren't you retired? Trim router would work too... 🙂

The better way is if you can clamp two pieces apart from each other that you can move the router up/down without it sliding off one of those two rails so you can cut a very wide swath.

I did something similar recently to route out the bottom of a slab of wood for a mantle so it would sit over the uneven bricks.

Description horrible, but something like this picture:

It's been casually discussed. Will not be a cheap swap based on our taste in furniture. And my taste in anything audio/video.

I have the tv mounted to a stand that allows me to pull it straight out like a drawer. I could just mount the new tv and slide it out until it hits. Of course we'd never be able to close the armoire doors.

It'll be easier to modify that wall unit than trying to find someone to take it. 🙂

Curb/free/habitat reUse store/fire

It's an adventure!
There are some nice pieces of furniture out there now - not so much in 2019 cause the TVs hadn't grown yet.
You'll need a new A/V system cause 8K UHD HDR.
I can give you the number of the kidney harvester I used.
