Broken collarbone questions

Sorry to hear about that Ian. Unfortunately a common injury for many of us that ride. I shattered my collarbone years ago and had no choice but to get the surgery. Recovery was better than I expected. My Mother broke her collarbone and ribs after getting t-boned a few months ago. She waited 3 weeks to get the clavicle surgery and was feeling fast relief after. She was in worse pain from the fractured clavicle than the pain from the displaced ribs that punctured a lung. Hope the surgery goes well and you recover quickly.

Short update because typing with one hand is a bitch...

Surgery done. Doc says no stressing the bone for 6 weeks. I'm sure my shoulder will need a fair amount of PT after that much inactivity.

Pain, but not at Oxy levels so I'll live. Definitely knocked me out more than I was expecting...

I distinctly remember waking up from surgery and having to pee...bad. So I said I had to go and the nurse was like get the catheter and I said fuck you give me the jug. Not sure if they liked me much after that.

Glad you're on the mend.

I remember getting back to the room and the nurse gave me this huge jug to pee in. So I go in the bathroom and fill it up and come back and she was kind of grossed out and said she just needed proof I had the ability to pee. Like hey, mention that first?

No stressing it, but are you at least able to move it? If you're able to at least get movement, that's what helps the shoulder from having issues.

Yes, to some extent. I'll see how goes as the weeks go on. I'm already stretching the Dr's orders by not taking the Gabapetin as much as prescribed since it seems to make me really drowsy and well... I need to work.

Better today as well. I can pretty much go without the sling so typing is better. At least for a little while. Tonight I'll replace the bandages and see what the stitches and pending scar will look like.

One of my teammates did an ATV ride 3 days after the same surgery. 😳 I don't think I'll push things that far, but I'm starting to understand why he'd push it.

I drove a dump truck a week or so after....good thing it wasn't far, the bouncing was enough to remind me to slow down.

Broke left collarbone in multiple places in 2010. Surgery was required as the pieces were not lined up and would never heal that way. Went to Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC (highly recommend). Two plates and a dozen screws. Rode at Kingdom Trails seven weeks later. Was fine then and has been ever since. Have broken the right collarbone two times (not bike related). Healed without surgery but left a lump there.

I was talking to Tom this evening and it turns out I smacked my head pretty good as well - I hadn't looked at the helmet since I got back to the car and put it away in my gear bag. The relatively new Lazer helmet has some scrapes and a couple of small dents. And now that I remember the day, I recall a short spell of ringing as I limped back to the car, so I probably got a mild concussion. Either way, it looks like I'll be getting a new helmet again.

Update! Saw the orthopedic this morning for my post-op evaluation. Staples came out and I'm now out of the sling - which is great since my elbow was really starting to bother me from not being able to move. Another appointment in 3 weeks and hopefully I'll be able to start PT and maybe start riding outside again.

Talking to an Ortho Monday, initial recommendation has been no surgery.
