Wawayanda State Park Conditions

I’ve had the pre made patches but the DIY ones are every bit as effective and virtually free since a can of tanglefoot will last multiple lifetimes.
not to thread-jack but any DIY suggestions for getting rid of those tiny bugs that hover in front of your face during humid weather? Heard dryer sheets might work but not looking to block the helmet vents. Thinking of some sort of aromatic spray I could do to the helmet (mint oil, etc)?

Pumphouse trail
excellent

- i would like to once again thank whoever is continually cutting back those damned thorns at the top of pines. you are a genuine hero

- red dot is still closed (6 weeks?). does anyone know if the park staff have even gone out to check it lately? i'm pretty sure that trail has been swallowed up by the forest at this point, which is very sad to me

- there's a large obnoxious tree down at the end of two bridges next to the cherry ridge entrance

- still some trees down on turkey ridge but it looks like someone made an attempt to cut the larger one. cut a big notch out of it but it's at a terrible angle and is elevated 18 inches (at least) off of the ground. i, for one, cannot clear it. still, nice attempt.

I don't think the park has the resources for tree removal, it left up to the trail users that aren't authorized, and Black Bear Cycle, the park stewards.

sure but red dot is an official park trail and was closed as i understand it by the park officials who were supposed to inspect it periodically to see if that tree had fallen and was no longer a danger. now, besides the fact that yesterday i rode directly under no fewer than 4 other large trees hovering across various trails that could easily kill someone if they fell at that specific time, i have my doubts that this periodic inspection actually happened and they're just going to leave it closed forever. this is a shame because i think there's a pretty substantial case that this trail has always been neglected and was being overgrown even before it was closed and wasn't even ridable 6 weeks ago

but hey it's a good thing my annual park pass and tax money is going towards PLENTY of lifeguards anyway. i counted 9 yesterday, a random wednesday

Light up a smoke when you stop for a whiz. Only half joking.

About the best conditions you could ask for in July. The perfect amount of moisture in the dirt and deer flies were nearly non-existent. The only real issue is thick undergrowth obscuring the trail.
I did some fern whacking on mojo, but lookout and porcupine could also use some attention.

If you can stand the bugs, this time of the year in the park is so nice. Trails with heavy mountain laurel bloom are covered with white petals in spots, super cool to ride through them. Will be gone in a few days/weeks, get it while you can.

very cool. i myself am having a miserable time LOL. biting flies are just about the worst i've ever seen, the trails are getting so overgrown thanks to all of the rain that you can't see the dirt in front of your wheel and the heat has been melting my face. nevertheless, i persist...

The deer flies are indeed out of control. I haven't seem them this bad in 20+ years of riding Wawayanda. The worst is when they get stuck in your helmet on a climb.

There's a small ish 3-4 inch diameter tree down just after the top of mojo right in the middle of that thorn patch. It's off the ground and is pretty well hidden. After the crash (...) I tried to expose it as much as possible and didn't have anything to cut it with so be very careful here

the stupid tree on mojo is cleared. thanks to whoever is taking care of the brush on mojo and hemlock. you are a hero to me

there's a really old and worn out looking tree down in the middle of hemlock that's about chest high. it's pretty big but the woodpeckers have been feasting on it for years. it's way too big and long for me to move and it's wedged between another tree so it will have to be cut probably

also it looks like the people have taken it into their own hands and reopened red dot. the trail closed signs are still (still...) up but all of the caution tape has been torn down. the other side as well. i'd avoid it though because i can tell you from experience it gets REALLY overgrown this time of year even with regular use. i can't imagine what it looks like after nobody has been on it for a month and a half

try pemrethin spray on your shirts for the deer flies, seems to limit the bites.

Anyone know the deal with the new blazes going up? Mojo and the beginning of hemlock have white rectangles painted on trees and rocks every 20 feet. Like they meant to keep going but just ran out of paint. Are we looking at another area being co-opted by the trail conference similar to what happened on sitting bear and pumphouse?
