But why would you need to remove the cassette from the freehub while out on the trail if you can pop the whole thing off to access a spoke?
I'm with you on that, and personally I don carry a spare cassette when I'm riding.

I was just asking @Steve Vai what is a tool free hub body as he was implying that the tool is no longer needed with one of those.

Someone went over that. The new hubs, by new l mean a Decade, no longer thread together. Or I should say very few do.

But that tool is for the cassette, not the hub. No?
I think what Jim.. or Steve.. is saying is the hub can be removed from the wheel without tools. The tool is used to separate the cassette from the hub not the hub from the wheel. So if I understand it correctly you can pull the cassette/hub assembly together from the wheel by hand.

Correct. Then, when doing this on the trail, you can dig the pawls and springs out of the dirt where they will likely end up.

Assuming you forgo the pulling off the hub, wouldn’t it be more practical to carry a small pair of snips to just clip the spoke off and then be on your way? That way it wouldn’t be a single purpose tool.

What you're suggesting then is using the tool would be better. LOL. OK, we're all having fun with this I guess. It takes up barely and space in my pack so it'll just be another tool I'm bringing that I hope will never need to use.

You just bend it around the next spoke or couple spokes so it doesn't bang around. And unthread the other portion from the nipple.

Or...pull the hub/cassette as a whole and just remove the spoke. If it's even the 50/50 chance it's on the hub side and not the rotor side.

Lol, she handles all the bills, no way I can hide it. Just need to hope I can sell the propain frame and old Ripley AF, to pay for this. 😬
Good luck with the resale, I made that agreement too. In the end I recovered about 75% of what I claimed I would lol

Yes it is. But you have to expect a new version to come out in a few months. And then all of a sudden you want the newer one…. 🙂

Yeah I'm eyeing the new version up when I replace my 5010. I like the option of going to Mullet to 29er and back depending on my mood.

It's a little beefy but who cares for a trail bike.
