Wharton Conditions

There was enough ash coming down yesterday that it looked like it was snowing in the Franklin Parker preserve. We ate at Buzby’s this morning (across from the command center for the current firefighting effort) and the fire was much more contained - our Forrest Fire service truly kicks ass!

Lots of trees down. Lizards loving the new docking stations. Lol.

So many trees down making for a crappy ride. I hope the diversions don’t stick and the downed trees are in the plan to get removed at the next trail maintenance which I hope to attend in November.
Thank you for your interest. Our first trail maintenance day is Sunday October 13.

Worth noting is that we have been volunteering at WSF since September 2006. We've seen the oaks killed by gypsy moths, the pines killed by beetles, everything charcoaled by several major wildfires, and witnessed some really dumb vandalism. We've also seen several volunteers be sidelined by insect borne diseases. Over the past eighteen years we've developed a TM schedule that resolves all of the ongoing forest issues AND keeps us volunteers safe, healthy, and happy. That last part about keeping us volunteers safe, healthy, and happy is the most important part.

18 years of trail volunteering! Attached article is from the AC Press - At The Shore, 4/26/07

Man when I hit post reply I had a feeling this came out wrong. Let me try again.
I have a screen shot of the maintenance days. Also I have also done many hours myself in Estell manor for years before jorba took it over and up untl two weeks ago.

I can’t make October but do intend to make November as stated above. Was wondering if the downed trees are going to stay now that riders have created “ride arounds”, or is the intent to have them cut out and return to its regular created trail?

I hope that reads better? Sorry if I offended anyone. I really do appreciate the volunteering and the trails. I even offered to but you guys pizza that one day I saw you out there. lol

No offense taken. I did not read your post as a negative.

My reply was something that is mentioned regularly and something that I was planning to post for our eighteenth volunteer year. 😀

Deadfall removal is assessed by sections. If the deadfalls enhance the trail by making it more sustainable or more interesting, they stay. If not, they are removed. Sometimes the new kink in the trail provided by a new deadfall and its route-around is what's needed to mitigate erosion and minimize future sugar sand piles.

No one has ever offered me pizza, or even a Mountain Dew, on the trail. 🙁

The current TWC forecast for the 10/13/24 Sunday Wharton MTB Trail Maintenance looks good. Meet in the lot at 9:00. Bring; bug spray, water, snacks, suitable footwear, and a sense of humor. Clippers will be provided. You will be asked to sign a waiver. Everyone is invited. Must be over 18 years old to attend. Thanks! Current plan is to clear the Huckleberry and Oak Hill Trails. Pedal or ride (Truck seating is limited. RSVP for truck seating.) back to the work location. Unsuitable weather/conditions cancels.

The Batsto Country Living Fair is Sunday 10/20/24. The Batsto area will be very crowded. Plan accordingly.

Big thanks to @John the Plumber for his red, white, and blue recon. Big thanks to Mr. Pibbles, Mr. Krinkle, and all the rest, for their latest work on the PBT.

Planned on volunteering on the 13th, would be interested in a seat in the truck if there’s room. Met you last month in the Batsto parking lot, I had just finished collecting some chiggers on a ride with my fat bike. 😂
