Jshort’s bike thread

I'l put MTB Nats as the A race, however I'm not putting that shit on a pedestal. I always suck for A events so I'm just hoping for a few local podiums and improvement from last year. You need an A race for a training plan, so I'll pick that. Although hopefully I can break the cycle of bad days on A races.

Like I said, Ken was the beast coach I had, results wise. I am not sure if he is still coaching though. I've narrowed it down to 2 coaches. One of which I just got off the phone with and the other I have a call with on Friday. We'll see..

Didn't he win the Dickerson Mine race?
I think so.

I think fasting works. Maybe not how he claims or with the results but fasting while doing low aerobic exercise while fasting can deplete and expand your glycogen store capacity. Typically 1.5-2 hours z2 or less and must take calories in at that point otherwise you risk burning muscle away. Supposedly one way it helps with cancer reduction is by forcing the body to burn fat and it's burned first from a fatty liver. This is merely things I have read over the years. Do some research. One thing that I think does help is cold plunging. After a hard workout but must weight an hour or two it. reduces next day muscle soreness drastically but keep in mind if you are just trying to build muscle doing it immediately after a workout can smother some of the gains.

I’m going to write about some of my favorite bike related purchases from the year. I bought a ton of shit this year, as I am sure most of us have. And…I have thoughts.

The first one that comes to mind, since I was just listening to one of their podcasts, is The Escape Collective membership. It's the best $100 I spent all year, even though most of their content which I consume, is free.

First, their Podcasts are great. They have a ton of different podcasts with different hosts. They have a couple which cover racing. They cover mostly Pro roads stuff, but I think they’re planning on more MTB coverage this years. They have a great one about about gear. The one I’m listening to now is about how the peloton is getting so much faster every year. It’s for sure the best collection of cycling podcasts out there. Most of them are free, but there are some that you can only access with a membership.

They also have online content which is best in the business. By far IMO. You can spend hours reading the articles. But you know you’re just there for the pictures. They always come across as very neutral, and not trying to sell you anything, Their reviews are written after the rest of the bikes sites (Bike Radar, Rumor, Pink Bike, etc) but that’s because they actually ride the bikes, or wheels, or dropper posts, or road group set, or whatever… they have put a ton of miles on before they write anything which gives them a ton of credibility.

And most the main cast is worth of following on socials.

Next favorite thing I bought this year.

Pro Bike tools Adjustable T Torque Wrench

I got this on sale at Amazon for $25 which may add to its allure, but I’ve owned a bunch or torque wrenches. This one seems to be the one grabbed the most. It’s only got settings for 4,5, and 6 Nm, but that seems to be all I need for most contact points on my bike (Stem, bars, brakes, seatpost clamp, etc) .

It’s pretty compact, very easy to adjust and the bit holder comes with just about all the bits you need for those contact points. The bit holder itself is super user friendly just by simply holding the bit securely, unlike some other bit holders I’ve used in the past.

I find my self using this and a prestacycle mini ratchet 99% of the time when I’m working on my bike. I bought this a few years ago and I always wished it were a torque wrench too, but there’s no way it could be this small and do torque. But between these two tools, my tight and cramped workshop gets a lot less cluttered.

Also, unrelated but related.

Blue S-Phyres. S-Phyres are definitely over rated. I have a pair of the next level down shoes (XC-702?) and they are literally 3 grams heavier and an unnoticeable amount of less stiff. But Blue XC shoes are underrated and thease guys were on sale, plus I had some credit, so the final was less than $150 which is pretty sick for shoes that are usually over $400 once the season kicks off. These are the 902s, and I know the 903s just came out. I am not sure what enhancements they offer.

I need a new pair of road shoes but I want to throw up spending $400. Granted the Shimano shoes I have now are still good and I think I’ve had them for 6 years plus

Good luck with those shoes. I had the previous generation of the 902 and they were awesome. The 902 sucks. The rear cleats ripped off less than three rides. Mike’s bikes warranty them for me, but they are made different now that they do not use Goodyear soles.

I love my sphyre road shoes. About 4 years old. No need to upgrade as they are perfect. The 902/903 mtb shoes are junk however imo

I have a similar Ritchey torque wrench that isn't adjustable and it's one of the best things I own. Similar size, 4 common bits used for stems/rotors so it's great to take when flying.

I just looked at the Pro Bike Tool you mentioned, it's $25 on Amazon after coupon still. Adding to cart and checking out.

The phone mount looks better in person honestly. Still meh at best though.

Here is the same mount with Garmin 830. This is nice IMO.

And the phone mount is really more for my MTB and following a loop / navigation with Trailforks. Following a trail on my Garmin is frustrating AF to me.

i would definitely NOT be mounting my expensive phone on the handlebars, but you do you. the garmin is an expensive enough device to be mounting out there, and mine sits on the stem cap.
