Indoor bike trainer?

Another vote for Kickr Core. I just bought one from another member here, set it up and rode a few times this weekend. Didn't really use the app, I just put on Netflix or Formula 1 and rode for an hour or so. Coming from relatively inexpensive 10 year-old wheel-on trainer this setup is a massive improvement. Super quiet and quite a realistic feeling when riding. Will prob leave the bike setup like this over the winter, but it's nice to be able to just pull it off the trainer and throw the rear wheel on to go for a ride outside if the opportunity presents itself.

Spent years riding a old bike in a trainer…. It sucks, shifter cable braking , shifting issues, blowing out the trainer resistance. just get a mid range spin bike… used if you can find one. Indoor training should only be interval training IMO, the style of intervals that if you did on a bike, you would fall off the bike.
We use technology to train now.
There is no need to shift or turn a red dial to some perceived level of pain. The algorithm looks at where you are and adapts.
It does all types of interval training. And is good for Endurance also. It records your session for critical analysis.

Im not sure about not using an hrm for training. VO2 max and all.

Gee, Scott's sure is sore at Wahoo for cancelling the penny farthing trainer.

Dumb trainer? I would need a way to power my smart trainer to control the resistance.
Power was on so trainer was fine, just the internet was out so the laptop couldn't connect. Cell service usually takes a dive in these situations too since everyone's phones will go off wifi and crowd the cell towers.

Gotcha...I have no idea why my brain ignored the Internet part of your post lol.

I've considered running my trainer on the small car power bank before though, won't lie.

Cassino down in his pain cave when the power goes out... 🤣 🤣

To play Devil's Advocate on the Zwift love train in here, I train indoors at least partially year round but I use TrainerRoad with a wheel on mountain bike (train like you race).

I've tried Zwift about 5 different times now and it does absolutely nothing for me. It's as boring as staring at the graph on TR without the benefits of following a decent workout IMO. I have no interest in virtual racing whatsoever...I just throw on either POV riding footage for tougher workouts or whatever documentary to pass the time if the workout is easy. Really depends on your goals.

I have the JetBlack Volt which is the predecessor to the Zwift Hub. It's been bulletproof...it just works. Quiet, easy to install and accurate. Only thing to be aware of the unit get super hot on longer rides. I've almost burnt my leg getting my shoes off after a workout.
I get motion sickness from YT pov vids. Though ok with Zwift. I just started back with Zwift, but half the time I'm just watching television or a podcast while maintaining some numbers. Still using an old Kinetic rocknroll.

Jumping in here a bit late, I have the Kickr and I absolutely love it, I ride it allot with Zwift.
Seems like the Core is on sale now and might even include a year of Zwift, from what I have read the Wahoo is worth the extra $100 or so over the Hub.
Personally I am a big user/fan of Zwift but some people like other apps etc.... the good thing is that it's month to moth so if you don't like it you are only out $17.
I'd say definitely get the Core (or the Kicker if you can swing the price, it's also on sale) and try Zwift for at least a month, it can seem overwhelming at first so you need to give it some time before you can really know if you like it or not.
To muddy the waters a bit, if you are really after a good deal, have a look a this https://bikecloset.com/product/elite-direto-xr-with-cassette/

Thanks for sharing this thread. Would be interested to hear your thoughts about the Zwift hub after you get it. I am looking to upgrade and it is on my list. Very tempted by the current deal too.

Upgraded from wheel on tacx flow to zwift hub last year, no issues or complaints with the hub. I updated the hub firmware, zwift app and subscription this morning and did first zwift session this afternoon. i was mentily prepared with issues, but didn't have any problems. I run zwift from an older ipad mini.

One of the more recent firmware updates gave Hub the ability to calibrate on teh fly without a discrete spindown test. That was really handy.

For anyone that uses XD-R cassettes, looks like the zwift shop has the XDR freehub bodies in stock now. My Bike runs a rival 12sp cassette and trying to use a comparable HG 12sp unit shifted like crap.
