The DIY thread - DIYourself

IIRC most of the wall units were of the "slide out" type. Looks like since its drooping the front plastic panel has pulled thru the wall now so good thing you caught it before it let go completely.

now that is more safe maybe you can find the model number and look up the installation manual online so you can reverse engineer it.

Or yeah just shove it out the wall and buy a new one. 😛

What differentiates the so called DIY ones from the "real" ones?

I'm assuming better quality from a name brand???

I installed a no-name one in a restaurant, and this is its 3rd summer - it is up and running already.
Might be over-estimating the failure, since only those people complain tho.

The Midea in window U shaped split units seem really nice.

Way more secure, easier install.

I almost want to get one for the bedroom so I'm only heating and cooling that room at night, plus quieter than the central fan turning on.

If I ever turned on the AC, opened the windows two months ago and haven't shut them...

I've seen great things about their air conditioners, but guess I was only partially aware that they had split type units as well. I now do all of my heating/cooling with a single head minisplit. Our house is a ranch and quite open so it works well, but obviously it's not terribly effective in rooms where the doors are closed. This could be an interesting supplemental option.

I had one that came with my house. The best day that I've had in the house was putting in the minisplit and kicking that thing to the curb 😂
AMEN to that, we had the same experience, the roll around units are such ineffective pieces of junk,

I have one of those rolling AC units with collapsible hose that goes to a window panel. Easy to move from room to room and goes in the closet when not in use.

and they cool equally well in the closet or in the hot room 🤣

I had a Fujitsu minisplit system installed two summers ago, 2 indoor units with the single outdoor unit. It was like $7,500 installed. Plus NJ offers rebates depending on the unit.
I'd need double that. At my previous place, I cooled my 700 sq ft garage woodshop with a single rolling unit. Got 15 years out of it. The coils were hopelessly clogged with a mixture of sawdust and paint overspray, but it still worked when I sold the house.

I'm not necessarily opposed to the rolling ones but my experience was with having one that was undersized for our house/living room that came with the house. It would bring interior temps down from 81 degrees to 78 degrees with a great deal of noise. The cord was too short to put it in any location where it worked nicely with where we had a window. We also only have casement windows so I had to make a custom insert to get it to work and it still heated the open glass to approximately 5,000 degrees. It was loud. It's not as efficient as a window unit. It takes up floor space.

Not trying to talk anyone into or out or anything but I hated that unit.

ours wouldnt even cool down either bedroom we had them in (only had them bc we had casement windows at the time).

We put in proper central after that summer, now the fan is in the attic and we never have to hear it, just get to live in a nice comfy house.

My recent estimate was $19k for 4 units for a 1800sqf two level house. I was also considering solar to run the compressor.

They are on sale this week at Costco, the 12k btu model. I recently bought two rolling units from Costco as well. The Hisense is smaller and also has a heat pump option, but the hose setup is really sloppy. The other, is from Danby, it's bigger but the hose is much cleaner and can be flush to the wall. Both are fairly loud and didn't really think about it till trying to watch TV today with it on. The Midea U models are supposed to be relatively quiet and will help since the window is adjacent to the TV.

Thinking to keep the Danby as I like the hose layout better. But it doesn't have heat options like the Hisense.
