Anyone on here fly with your bike during these crazy times

Hey guys/gals, I haven't been on here much lately hopefully everyone I have met is doing well.
I am flying out to visit the in-laws in AZ for Xmas. Usually myself and so rent a bike while out there to take in the great riding. So I called up the bike shop we use there and with covid and the lack of inventory none of the shops out there are doing rentals.... So that leads me into either not riding while out there or shipping the bikes or possibly bring them on united airline with us..
I have never traveled with the bikes via air so wanted to see what the general consensus is currently.

Thank you.

depends on the airline and as I recall United is the worst (cost). Shipping via bike flights seemed the most reasonable for a trip I was supposed to go on this fall to Hurricane UT. Either way....air or ship you need a box of some kind and have to tear down the bike more than you want set it up and then repeat to come home. If its a quick trip, might not be worth it vs the ease of renting (when available).

I flew with my bike on United about a month ago. It was super easy but they did charge me $150 for the oversize/bike round trip baggage fee.
If you're not comfortable with the assembling/disassembling the bike you might be able to ship it to one of the local bike shops via bike flights and have them handle it for you.

Do a search, there's a long thread on this.

My preference is the Post Carry case. It is oversized but I check it as luggage, not a bike.

Many trips and the only issue I have had was Phoenix got me as oversized on the flight back. They have so much sports stuff go through they are on the lookout.

They charged me $150 bike fee earlier this year. Got a refund from United when I complained saying it was a travel bike in luggage.

Regular bike cases are more expensive and will always have extra fees. Plus they are big.

Check into bike flights or whatever the current cheap option is. Shipping a can save some day-of-travel headaches.

I have the Post Carry and still got charged $150. The person checking my bag commented "this is clearly a bike bag so the $150 fee applies". I might give United a call. Couldn't hurt.

I sometimes got asked "Whats in the luggage?", answering "Clothing and personal effects." Got the fisheye, but was let through. The one time I got a TSA callback, they asked, and I said "Bicycle, clothing, and gear.", which they accepted.

I got hit with the bike charge surcharge, not oversized luggage. So just call and say you believe they screwed up and that you were checking a travel bike that was under the weight and size limit.
