Mercer County Park Conditions

Mick, Al & I had the brush hog out last evening in Van Nest. Can you say SMOKY? From the parking lot: Orange, Yellow and the connecting trail in-between have been trimmed. We removed two downed trees on the connector. The area below the dam was also cut.

TAS
Thank you!

Received a report that the tornado damaged trees next to the ponds on blue north had finally dropped. Mick & I went over and cleared them this afternoon. More pics to follow.

We also noticed that the beavers are attempting to utilize the bridge and incorporate it into a beaver dam!! We cleared the off the surface and underneath the bridge. The material was packed quite solidly and included large stones and mud!

The picture really doesn't show the amount of material that we had to remove.

If this continues I will need to notify the park naturalist and wildlife management about removal-relocation. I like beavers as much as anybody but not when they are blocking the trail and burying a bridge.

Went for a ride on the south side beginning in Van Nest yesterday. Red, Yellow, Orange, Pax twisty, red loop @east picnic, Grail SOB, Blue by the lake. Lots of smalls from the recent storm. All in all pretty darn good. Kudos to Al & Rudy.. the Grail trail is the best I have seen it trimmed! A few "duckers" here & there.
I removed a tree down on red trail past the tennis center. Cut a tree off the trail that was down near the BMX pit.

Low hanging tree on Blue if you go right after the double bridge. I cleaned it up but it still needs work.

Thanks @TAS for the work. I agree, conditions are pretty good right now. By the brick house bn West Picnic & the marina is pretty overgrown.

Thanks for the heads up Al. Nice clean up...Figures.... the one section of blue I didn't ride.... I went left after the bridges! I'll get out there tomorrow with Katana boy. He has a new blade and wow what a difference. TM is scheduled on the 19th. We can Brush Hog Red around the old farmhouse and Yellow - Orange under the power lines.

Deet up - the Gnats are getting bad!

Katana Boy did the job! Took about 20 Min. Gnats were terrible.
It was a wild cherry tree loaded with fruit...so I had a nice reward snack afterwards.
Trimmed face slappers on the in-way out.

Mick & I cleared the large tree that was down on Orange trail below the dam today. The pic is halfway thru the removal. It was a lot bigger that we first thought looking at Al's pic! On the way out we cleared every dead tree that we saw near the trail. Also cleared the tree hanging over orange trail near the dam basin.

Red is Trail is clear! Had some time today to clear the two trees that were down on Red Trail adjacent to the tennis courts. Also cleaned up some hangers and trail side debris.

Got out there yesterday. I have sore back (long story) so I was moving kinda Sloooow as in OW- Ouch! There were two trees down on Slalom. Cleared them first. Then trundled on over to the tennis center. Got that one.
Done. The big one on Blue North will have to wait until after Christmas.

If anybody riding sees something down please post here and we will get to it.
Merry Christmas Everyone!

Are the trails good other than the downed trees? Thinking about taking my kid here tomorrow morning for her first trail ride.

North and East Picnic side of the park is closed for deer hunting. Stick to the south side and West picnic areas. Trails there are sandy. Red Trail is clear from the west picnic area to east picnic. There may be high water along the creek - Orange trail into Van Nest area. The Yellow trail and paxton Twistys should also be fine, maybe an occasional wet spot.
Here's to a great first trail ride!
