I used to commute into NYC and saw people on them here in NJ and in NYC a lot. Aside from helmet and gloves, get him one with a headlight. It will get him noticed which is a good thing.

The campus is not hilly although it's on top of the hill from town. Are you asking about this for the board power or his safety?
